{"id":24975,"date":"2026-08-16T19:36:25","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T19:36:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24975"},"modified":"2026-08-16T19:36:25","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T19:36:25","slug":"tropical-storm-lala-brings-wind-and-rain-to-honolulu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=24975","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Lala Brings Wind and Rain to Honolulu"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Lala brought wind and rain to Honolulu on Sunday.\u00a0 At 2:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Lala was located at latitude 20.7\u00b0N and longitude 158.8\u00b0W which put the center about 75 miles (120 km) southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii.\u00a0 Lala was moving toward the northwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 994 mb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Maui County including Maui, Lanai, Molokai, and Kahoolawe.\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Oahu and for Kauai County including Kauai and Niihau.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Almost 60,000 customers in Hawaii are without electricity because of Tropical Storm Lala.<\/p>\n<p>Former Hurricane Lala weakened as it moved south of the Hawaiian Islands on Sunday.\u00a0 However, the circulation around Tropical Storm Lala was still very well organized.\u00a0 A small circular eye was evident at the center of Lala&#8217;s circulation on radar images.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Tropical Storm Lala.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Lala generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane.\u00a0 The removal of mass in the upper levels was less than the convergence of mass in the lower levels of the atmosphere.\u00a0 So, the surface pressure increased on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of wind speeds in Tropical Storm Lala continued to be asymmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 140 miles (225 km) in the northern side of Lala&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force only extended out 60 miles (95 km) in the southern side of Tropical Storm Lala.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Lala will move through an environment that will be unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Lala will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the middle of an upper level ridge that is southwest of Hawaii.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak near the middle of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 However, Tropical Storm Lala will continue to move into a region of drier air that is southwest of Hawaii.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Lala is likely to continue to weaken gradually during the next 24 hours because of the effects of the drier air.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Lala will move around the southern part of a high pressure system that is over the Central North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Lala toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, the center of Tropical Storm Lala will pass south of Kauai.<\/p>\n<p>Bands in the northern and eastern parts of Tropical Storm Lala will continue to bring gusty winds and heavy rain to Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Kahoolawe, Oahu, Kauai, and Niihau during the next few hours.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><strong>Flood Watches are in effect for Maui County, Oahu, and Kauai County.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Lala brought wind and rain to Honolulu on Sunday.\u00a0 At 2:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Lala was located at latitude 20.7\u00b0N and longitude 158.8\u00b0W which put the center about 75 miles (120 km) southwest of Honolulu, Hawaii.\u00a0 Lala was moving toward the northwest at 14 m.p.h.
