Hurricane Lowell intensified back to Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale as it moved south-southwest of Hawaii on Friday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Hurricane Lowell was located at latitude 13.3\u00b0N and longitude 161.4\u00b0W which put the center about 615 miles (990 km) south-southwest of Lihue, Hawaii.\u00a0 Lowell was moving toward the west at 7 m.p.h. (11 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 160 m.p.h. (260 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 190 m.p.h. (305 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 922 mb.<\/p>\n
Hurricane Lowell strengthened back to Category 5 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on Friday evening.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 30 miles (50 km) was at the center of Lowell\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Hurricane Lowell.\u00a0 Storms near the center generated stronger upper level divergence that pumped more mass away from the hurricane.\u00a0 The removal of more mass in the upper levels of the atmosphere caused the surface pressure to decrease on Friday.<\/p>\n
The distribution of wind speeds in Hurricane Lowell was fairly symmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 60 miles (95 km) from the center of Lowell\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 160 miles (260 km) from the center of Hurricane Lowell.<\/p>\n
The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Lowell is 35.0. The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 18.9 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 53.9.\u00a0 Hurricane Lowell is similar in intensity to Hurricane Maria when Maria hit Puerto Rico in 2017.<\/p>\n
Hurricane Lowell will move through an environment favorable for a strong hurricane during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Lowell will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C. It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind wind shear.\u00a0 Hurricane Lowell is likely to maintain its intensity during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n
Hurricane Lowell will move around the southern side of a high pressure system that is over the Central North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Lowell toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Lowell will remain south-southwest of Hawaii on Saturday.\u00a0 Lowell is forecast to start moving toward the north during the weekend.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, Hurricane Karina continued to weaken gradually east of Hawaii and Hurricane Marie was spinning southwest of Baja California.<\/p>\n
At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Hurricane Karina was located at latitude 20.7\u00b0N and longitude 141.9\u00b0W which put the center about 860 miles (1380 km) east of Hilo, Hawaii.\u00a0 Karina was moving toward the west at 9 m.p.h. (15 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 95 m.p.h. (150 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 982 mb.<\/p>\n
At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Hurricane Marie was located at latitude 20.8\u00b0N and longitude 119.0\u00b0W which put the center about 600 miles (965 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Marie was moving toward the northwest at 8 m.p.h. (13 km\/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 120 m.p.h.
