{"id":25422,"date":"2026-10-05T03:16:39","date_gmt":"2026-10-05T03:16:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=25422"},"modified":"2026-10-05T03:16:39","modified_gmt":"2026-10-05T03:16:39","slug":"hurricane-rachel-still-south-of-baja-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=25422","title":{"rendered":"Hurricane Rachel Still South of Baja California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Rachel was still spinning over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Baja California on Sunday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Hurricane Rachel was located at latitude 20.2\u00b0N and longitude 114.8\u00b0W which put the center about 365 miles (590 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Rachel was moving toward the west-northwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 120 m.p.h. (195 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 967 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Although Hurricane Rachel strengthened earlier on Sunday, Rachel appeared to be weakening again on Sunday.\u00a0 Hurricane Rachel was moving into a large mass of drier air.\u00a0 The drier air caused many of the thunderstorms in the northern side of Rachel&#8217;s circulation to dissipate.\u00a0 Thunderstorms were still occurring in bands in the southern half of Hurricane Rachel.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Rachel still generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane.\u00a0 However, the removal of mass in the upper levels was less than the convergence of mass in the lower levels of the atmosphere.\u00a0 So, the surface pressure started to increase again.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of wind speeds in Hurricane Rachel was still fairly symmetrical on Sunday evening.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 40 miles (65 km) from the center of Rachel&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 140 miles (225 km) from the center of Hurricane Rachel.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Rachel will move through an environment that will be unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Rachel will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 However, Rachel will continue to move through the mass of drier air.\u00a0 Hurricane Rachel is likely to weaken on Monday because of the effects of the drier air.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Rachel will move around the southern side of a high pressure system that is over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Rachel toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Hurricane Rachel will move farther away from Baja California.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Hurricane Rachel was still spinning over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Baja California on Sunday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Hurricane Rachel was located at latitude 20.2\u00b0N and longitude 114.8\u00b0W which put the center about 365 miles (590 km) west-southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Rachel [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,2],"tags":[236,39,237,4240,4236],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25422"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=25422"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25422\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":25423,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/25422\/revisions\/25423"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=25422"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=25422"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=25422"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
