{"id":25435,"date":"2026-10-06T03:34:41","date_gmt":"2026-10-06T03:34:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=25435"},"modified":"2026-10-06T03:34:41","modified_gmt":"2026-10-06T03:34:41","slug":"typhoon-nolo-moves-northeast-of-wake-island","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=25435","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Nolo Moves Northeast of Wake Island"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Nolo moved northeast of Wake Island on Monday evening.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Typhoon Nolo was located at latitude 25.7\u00b0N and longitude 172.0\u00b0E which put the center about 600 miles (970 km) northeast of Wake Island.\u00a0 Nolo was moving toward the west at 17 m.p.h. (28 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 120 m.p.h. (195 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 150 m.p.h. (240 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 955 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Nolo did not change much on Monday.\u00a0 A circular eye with a diameter of 30 miles (50 km) was at the center of Nolo&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Typhoon Nolo.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Nolo generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the typhoon.\u00a0 The removal of mass in the upper levels was nearly equal to the convergence of mass in the lower levels of the atmosphere.\u00a0 So, the surface pressure did not change much on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of wind speeds around Typhoon Nolo was fairly symmetrical.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 50 miles (80 km) from the center of Nolo&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 155 miles (250 km) from the center of Typhoon Nolo.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Nolo is 22.1.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 16.1 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 38.2.\u00a0 Typhoon Nolo is similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Milton, when Milton hit Florida in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Nolo will move through an environment that will be somewhat unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Nolo will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce northeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Nolo&#8217;s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Nolo is likely to weaken gradually on Tuesday because of the moderate vertical wind shear.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Nolo will move around the southern side of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Nolo toward the west during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Typhoon Nolo will pass north of Wake Island on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere over the Western North Pacific Ocean, Typhoon Choi-wan weakened gradually northeast of Iwo To and Tropical Storm Koguma strengthened slowly north of Kwajalein.<\/p>\n<p>At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Typhoon Choi-wan was located at latitude 30.8\u00b0N and longitude 146.3\u00b0E which put the center about 440 miles (710 km) northeast of Iwo To.\u00a0 Choi-wan was moving toward the north at 16 m.p.h. (26 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 110 m.p.h. (175 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 130 m.p.h. (210 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 945 mb.<\/p>\n<p>At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Koguma was located at latitude 13.2\u00b0N and longitude 166.7\u00b0E which put the center about 295 miles (475 km) north of Kwajalein. Koguma was moving toward the northwest at 11 m.p.h. (17 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 65 m.p.h.
