(8 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 150 m.p.h. (240 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 175 m.p.h. (280 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 932 mb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the portion of the coast from Punta San Telmo to El Roblito, Mexico.\u00a0 The Hurricane Warning includes Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>A Hurricane Warning is in effect for Las Islas Marias.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for the portion of the coast from Punta San Telmo to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Simon intensified to Category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Simon101026.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-25507\" src=\"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Simon101026-300x282.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Simon101026-300x282.png 300w, https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Simon101026-624x587.png 624w, https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/Simon101026.png 633w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The inner end of a rainband wrapped around the existing eye and eyewall on Saturday.\u00a0 Concentric eyewalls were at the center of Hurricane Simon.\u00a0 The inner eyewall had a diameter of 14 miles (22 km).\u00a0 The outer eyewall had a diameter of 40 miles (65 km).<\/p>\n<p>Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Simon\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the core of Simon generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane.\u00a0 The removal of mass caused the surface pressure to decrease.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Hurricane Simon was small.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane force extended out 25 miles (40 km) from the center of Simon\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 90 miles (145 km) from the center of Hurricane Simon.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Simon is 31.6.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 8.5 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 40.1.\u00a0 Hurricane Simon is bigger and stronger than Hurricane Charley was when Charley hit southwest Florida in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Simon will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 12 hours.\u00a0 Simon will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the middle of an upper level ridge that is over Mexico and the Eastern North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The upper level ridge winds are weak near the middle of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Hurricane Simon could weaken during the next few hours if an eyewall replacement cycle occurs, even though Simon is in a favorable environment.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Simon will move around the western part of a high pressure system that is over Mexico.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Simon toward the north during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track, the center of Hurricane Simon will be near Manzanillo on Sunday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Hurricane Simon will be a major hurricane when it hits the west coast of Mexico.\u00a0 Simon will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to the west coast of Mexico.\u00a0 The strongest winds and heaviest rains will occur in Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit.\u00a0 Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods in some locations.\u00a0 Hurricane Simon could cause a storm surge of up to 16 feet (5 meters) along parts of the west coast of Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Rachel was moving quickly toward northern Baja California.<\/p>\n<p>At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Storm Rachel was located at latitude 27.0\u00b0N and longitude 118.3\u00b0W which put the center about 255 miles (415 km) southwest of Punta Baja, Mexico.\u00a0 Rachel was moving toward the north-northeast at 30 m.p.h. (48 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h.
