Former Tropical Storm Cempaka strengthened to a typhoon as it moved over the Western North Pacific Ocean southwest of Iwo To.\u00a0 At 4:00 a.m. EST on Sunday the center of Typhoon Cempaka was located at latitude 22.2\u00b0N and longitude 136.9\u00b0E which put the center about 315 miles (505 km) southwest of Iwo To.\u00a0 Cempaka was moving toward the west-northwest at 17 m.p.h. (28 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 985 mb.<\/p>\n

The strongest winds were occurring in the northern side of Typhoon Cempaka.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 30 miles (50 km) in the northern half of Cempaka’s circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 115 miles (185 km) from the center of Typhoon Cempaka.<\/p>\n
Typhoon Cempaka will move through an environment that will be favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Cempaka will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the southwestern part of an upper level ridge that is southeast of Japan.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will produce southeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Cempaka\u2019s circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The vertical wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the wind shear probably will not be enough to prevent intensification.\u00a0 Typhoon Cempaka is likely to\u00a0 intensify during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n
Typhoon Cempaka will move around the southwestern part of a high pressure system that is over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high pressure system will steer Cempaka toward the northwest during the next 12 hours.\u00a0 Cempaka is likely to turn back toward the east-northeast on Monday when it reaches the western end of the high pressure system.\u00a0 On its anticipated track, Typhoon Cempaka will approach Iwo To in 48 hours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
