{"id":3238,"date":"2016-10-10T22:03:58","date_gmt":"2016-10-10T22:03:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3238"},"modified":"2016-10-10T22:03:58","modified_gmt":"2016-10-10T22:03:58","slug":"tropical-storm-nicole-prompts-hurricane-watch-for-bermuda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3238","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Nicole Prompts Hurricane Watch for Bermuda"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While water rescues continued in parts of North Carolina and recovery efforts accelerated after the passage of Hurricane Matthew, Tropical Storm Nicole prompted the issuance of a Hurricane Watch for Bermuda.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Nicole was located at latitude 26.3\u00b0N and longitude 65.4\u00b0W which put it about 415 miles (670 km) south of Bermuda.\u00a0 Nicole was moving toward the north at 6 m.p.h. (10 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 60 m.p.h. (95 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 992 mb.<\/p>\n<p>After becoming a hurricane last Thursday Nicole weakened back to a tropical storm during the weekend.\u00a0 A combination of intermittent vertical wind shear and drier air caused the structure of Tropical Storm Nicole to deteriorate.\u00a0 The eye disappeared and the thunderstorms in the rainbands weakened.\u00a0 There appears to be a remnant of the eyewall, but it only consists of lower clouds and showers.\u00a0 Several rainbands exist around the circulation, although they are not as strong as they were a few days ago.\u00a0 Thunderstorms southeast of the center of circulation seem to have increased on Monday afternoon.\u00a0 The new thunderstorms are generating some upper level divergence but it is not currently well developed.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Nicole is an environment that is marginal for intensification.\u00a0 An upper level trough north of Nicole is generating some vertical wind shear.\u00a0 In addition cooler, drier air has moved close to the western part of the circulation of Tropical Storm Nicole.\u00a0 On the other hand, Tropical Storm Nicole is moving over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 So, there is plenty of energy in the upper ocean.\u00a0 The vertical wind shear and drier air could prevent Tropical Storm Nicole from intensifying much on Tuesday.\u00a0 The upper level trough will move off to the east and the vertical wind shear could decrease during the middle of the week.\u00a0 If the shear diminishes and not much drier air gets pulled into the circulation, then Tropical Storm Nicole has a chance to intensify into a hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>A high pressure system blocked the northward movement of Tropical Storm Nicole and the high even pushed Nicole toward the south at times during the weekend.\u00a0 The high appears to be moving farther to the east, which is allowing Tropical Storm Nicole to move slowly toward the north.\u00a0 As the high pressure system shifts to the east, it will start to steer Tropical Storm Nicole more toward the northwest.\u00a0 When Nicole reaches the western end of the high, it will turn toward the northeast.\u00a0 The westerly winds in the middle latitudes will accelerate Nicole toward the northeast later this week.\u00a0 On its anticipated track the center of Tropical Storm Nicole could pass near Bermuda on Thursday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While water rescues continued in parts of North Carolina and recovery efforts accelerated after the passage of Hurricane Matthew, Tropical Storm Nicole prompted the issuance of a Hurricane Watch for Bermuda.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Nicole was located at latitude 26.3\u00b0N and longitude 65.4\u00b0W which put it about [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2],"tags":[551,552,31,550],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3238"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=3238"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3238\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3239,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3238\/revisions\/3239"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=3238"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=3238"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=3238"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
