{"id":3301,"date":"2016-10-19T22:09:48","date_gmt":"2016-10-19T22:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3301"},"modified":"2016-10-19T22:09:48","modified_gmt":"2016-10-19T22:09:48","slug":"typhoon-haima-producing-strong-winds-and-heavy-rain-over-northern-luzon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3301","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Haima Producing Strong Winds and Heavy Rain Over Northern Luzon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Haima was producing strong winds and heavy rain as it moved across northern Luzon on Wednesday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Typhoon Haima was located at latitude 18.2\u00b0N and longitude 120.8\u00b0E which put it about 10 miles (15 km) east of Laoag, Philippines.\u00a0 Haima was moving toward the west-northwest at 20 m.p.h. (32 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 115 m.p.h. (185 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 145 m.p.h. (235 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 946 mb.<\/p>\n<p>The center of Typhoon Haima moved quickly across northern Luzon on Wednesday.\u00a0 Haima made landfall on northeastern Luzon east of Tuguegarao.\u00a0 As it moved toward the west-northwest the center of Typhoon Haima passed near Tuao and Dingras.\u00a0 The center also passed over the Cordillera Central, where it produced very heavy rain in places where the wind was blowing up the slopes of the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Movement across the mountain ranges in northern Luzon weakened Typhoon Haima and an eye is no longer evident on satellite images.\u00a0 However, Haima is still a large, powerful typhoon.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extend out 65 miles (105 km) from the center of circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extend out about 240 miles (390 km) from the center.\u00a0 The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Haima is 20.6.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 25.6 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 46.2.\u00a0 The indices indicate that Typhoon Haima is capable of causing widespread major wind damage.<\/p>\n<p>The core of Typhoon Haima is not as well organized as it was before the typhoon made landfall in Luzon.\u00a0\u00a0 Some reorganization of the core could occur when Typhoon Haima moves over the South China Sea.\u00a0 Haima will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak and Typhoon Haima is still producing strong upper level divergence which is pumping mass away in all directions.\u00a0 Typhoon Haima could restrengthen somewhat or maintain its intensity after the center moves northwest of the Philippines.\u00a0 When Haima nears the coast of China, it will approach an upper level trough and vertical wind shear will increase.\u00a0 So, Typhoon Haima is likely to be on a weakening trend when it makes landfall in China.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Haima is moving around the western end of subtropical ridge which is steering it toward the west-northwest.\u00a0 Typhoon Haima is likely to move more toward the northwest after it leaves Luzon and reaches the end of the ridge.\u00a0 When Typhoon Haima nears the coast of China, it will move under southwesterly winds caused by an upper level trough over China.\u00a0 Those winds will turn Haima more toward the north.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Typhoon Haima could make a landfall in China northeast of Hong Kong in about 36 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Haima will continue to produce strong winds and heavy rains over parts of northern Luzon for a few more hours until the core of the typhoon moves northwest of that region.\u00a0 The heavy rain has the potential to cause floods and mudslides.\u00a0 Although Typhoon Haima is likely to be weakening when it reaches the coast of China, it will still be capable of producing strong winds, heavy rain, floods and a storm surge along the coast.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Haima was producing strong winds and heavy rain as it moved across northern Luzon on Wednesday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Typhoon Haima was located at latitude 18.2\u00b0N and longitude 120.8\u00b0E which put it about 10 miles (15 km) east of Laoag, Philippines.\u00a0 Haima was moving toward the west-northwest at [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[242,43,127,44,103,130,42,96,556,243],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3301"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=3301"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3301\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3302,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3301\/revisions\/3302"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=3301"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=3301"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=3301"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
