{"id":3540,"date":"2016-12-24T15:39:16","date_gmt":"2016-12-24T15:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3540"},"modified":"2016-12-24T15:39:16","modified_gmt":"2016-12-24T15:39:16","slug":"dangerous-typhoon-nock-ten-threatens-the-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3540","title":{"rendered":"Dangerous Typhoon Nock-ten Threatens the Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dangerous Typhoon Nock-ten intensified to super typhoon status on Saturday and it posed a significant threat to the northern Philippines.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Saturday the center of Typhoon Nock-ten was located at latitude 13.5\u00b0N and longitude 127.1\u00b0E which put it about 440 miles (715 km) east of Manila, Philippines.\u00a0 Nock-ten was moving toward the west at 8 m.p.h. (13 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 150 m.p.h. (240 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 185 m.p.h. (290 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 928 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Nock-ten is a very strong, well organized typhoon.\u00a0 Nock-ten has a small eye surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms.\u00a0 A rainband is wrapping around the eye and concentric eyewalls could be forming.\u00a0 Additional rainbands are rotating around the core of the circulation.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extend out about 40 miles (65 km) from the center.\u00a0 Thunderstorms in the core of the typhoon are generating strong upper level divergence which is pumping out mass in all directions.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Nock-ten is moving through an environment that is favorable for tropical cyclones.\u00a0 It is moving over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak and there is little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 If concentric eyewalls forms, then there could be a period of weakening as the inner eyewall dissipates and the inflow becomes concentrated in the outer eyewall.\u00a0 Wind speeds could increase again if the outer eyewall starts to contract.\u00a0 In either case Typhoon Nock-ten will be a dangerous typhoon when it reaches the Philippines<\/p>\n<p>A subtropical ridge to the north of Nock-ten is steering the typhoon toward the west and that general motion is expected to continue.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Typhoon Nock-ten will reach Catanduanes Island within 24 hours.\u00a0 Nock-ten is expected to move across southern Luzon.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) is 31.6 and the Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 15.5.\u00a0 The Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) is 47.1.\u00a0 Those indices indicate that Nock-ten is capable of producing regional significant wind damage.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Nock-ten will cause significant wind damage when it moves across the Philippines.\u00a0 It will also generate a significant storm surge in portions of the coast near the path of the center.\u00a0 Nock-ten will cause heavy rain and create the potential for floods and mudslides over parts of Catanduanes Island and southern Luzon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dangerous Typhoon Nock-ten intensified to super typhoon status on Saturday and it posed a significant threat to the northern Philippines.\u00a0 At 10:00 a.m. EST on Saturday the center of Typhoon Nock-ten was located at latitude 13.5\u00b0N and longitude 127.1\u00b0E which put it about 440 miles (715 km) east of Manila, Philippines.\u00a0 Nock-ten was moving toward [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[601,103,96,603,63,602],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3540"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=3540"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3540\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3541,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3540\/revisions\/3541"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=3540"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=3540"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=3540"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
