{"id":3634,"date":"2017-02-09T03:43:34","date_gmt":"2017-02-09T03:43:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3634"},"modified":"2017-02-09T03:43:34","modified_gmt":"2017-02-09T03:43:34","slug":"tropical-cyclone-carlos-intensifies-southwest-of-la-reunion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3634","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Carlos Intensifies Southwest of La Reunion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Carlos intensified on Wednesday as it moved farther southwest of La Reunion.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday the center of Tropical Cyclone Carlos was located at latitude 23.9\u00b0S and longitude 53.4\u00b0E which put it about 240 miles (390 km) south-southwest of St. Denis, La Reunion.\u00a0 Carlos was moving toward the southeast at 9 m.p.h. (15 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 989 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Carlos is more well organized than it has been during any part of its existence.\u00a0 A ring of thunderstorms wraps nearly completely around a small eye at the center of circulation.\u00a0 There is only a small break in the eyewall on the northwest side of the eye.\u00a0 Several other bands of thunderstorms exist in the eastern half of the circulation.\u00a0 There are far fewer thunderstorms in the western half of the circulation.\u00a0 The thunderstorms in the eyewall are generating strong upper level divergence which is pumping out mass in all directions.\u00a0 The well developed upper level divergence allowed the surface pressure to decrease and the winds increased in response to the lower central pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Carlos moved into an area where the upper level winds were not as strong and the vertical wind shear diminished.\u00a0 Carlos is currently in an area where there is little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 It is moving over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 When the shear diminished the tropical cyclone was able to extract and to use the energy from the ocean more efficiently which allowed it to intensify.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Carlos will continue to move through a favorable environment for another 24 to 36 hours.\u00a0 It still has a chance to intensify into the equivalent of a hurricane\/typhoon.\u00a0 Eventually, when Tropical Cyclone Carlos moves to a higher latitude, it will move into an area of stronger upper level winds.\u00a0 When that happens increased wind shear and cooler Sea Surface Temperatures will cause Tropical Cyclone Carlos to weaken.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Carlos has reached the western end of a subtropical ridge.\u00a0 The counterclockwise flow around the ridge is starting to steer Carlos toward the southeast.\u00a0 A general southeasterly motion is expected to continue during the next several days.\u00a0 On its anticipated track the core of Tropical Cyclone Carlos with the strongest winds is expected to pass south of La Reunion.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Carlos intensified on Wednesday as it moved farther southwest of La Reunion.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Wednesday the center of Tropical Cyclone Carlos was located at latitude 23.9\u00b0S and longitude 53.4\u00b0E which put it about 240 miles (390 km) south-southwest of St. Denis, La Reunion.\u00a0 Carlos was moving toward the southeast at [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[48,2],"tags":[619,84,85,74,620,618],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3634"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=3634"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3634\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3635,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3634\/revisions\/3635"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=3634"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=3634"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=3634"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
