{"id":3956,"date":"2017-05-09T04:20:58","date_gmt":"2017-05-09T04:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3956"},"modified":"2017-05-09T04:21:18","modified_gmt":"2017-05-09T04:21:18","slug":"tropical-cyclone-donna-brings-wind-and-rain-to-new-caledonia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=3956","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Donna Brings Wind and Rain to New Caledonia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Donna brought wind and rain to New Caledonia as it moved over that region.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Cyclone Donna was located at latitude 19.9\u00b0S and longitude 166.8\u00b0E which put it about 185 miles (295 km) north of Noumea, New Caledonia.\u00a0 Donna was moving toward the south-southeast at 11 m.p.h. (17 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 110 m.p.h. (175 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 130 m.p.h. (215 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 962 mb.<\/p>\n<p>The inner core of Tropical Cyclone Donna remained intact despite increased vertical wind shear on Monday.\u00a0 A well formed circular eye with a diameter of 30 miles (50 km) was evident on microwave satellite images.\u00a0 A ring of strong thunderstorms wrapped around the eye.\u00a0 Additional bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of the circulation.\u00a0 The size of the circulation of Tropical Cyclone Donna increased on Monday.\u00a0 Winds to hurricane\/typhoon force extend out about 80 miles (130 km) on the eastern side of the center and about 45 miles (75 km) on the western side.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out about 200 miles (320 km) from the center.<\/p>\n<p>The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Tropical Cyclone Donna was 19.2.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 23.3 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index was 42.5.\u00a0 These indices suggest that Tropical Cyclone Donna is very similar in size and intensity to Hurricane Gustav in 2008 just before Gustav made landfall in Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Donna will weaken during the next several days.\u00a0 An upper level trough is approaching it from the west.\u00a0 The upper level trough is generating northwesterly winds which are blowing toward the top of the circulation.\u00a0 The northwesterly winds are inhibiting upper level divergence to the west of Donna and moderate vertical wind shear will continue to weaken the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 In addition Tropical Cyclone Donna will move over cooler SSTs when it moves farther south.<\/p>\n<p>The winds in the upper level trough are pushing Tropical Cyclone Donna toward the south-southeast.\u00a0 That general motion is expected to continue during the next several days.\u00a0 On its anticipated track the core of Tropical Cyclone Donna will move over the Iles Loyaute (Loyalty Islands).\u00a0 Donna will bring strong gusty winds winds to those islands.\u00a0 In addition rainbands will bring wind and heavy rain to parts of New Caledonia.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Donna is capable of causing widespread serious damage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Donna brought wind and rain to New Caledonia as it moved over that region.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Cyclone Donna was located at latitude 19.9\u00b0S and longitude 166.8\u00b0E which put it about 185 miles (295 km) north of Noumea, New Caledonia.\u00a0 Donna was moving toward the south-southeast [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[76,2],"tags":[347,89,650,88,92,348,676,90],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3956"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=3956"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3956\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":3957,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/3956\/revisions\/3957"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=3956"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=3956"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=3956"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
