{"id":4046,"date":"2017-06-11T20:46:19","date_gmt":"2017-06-11T20:46:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=4046"},"modified":"2017-06-11T20:46:19","modified_gmt":"2017-06-11T20:46:19","slug":"tropical-storm-merbok-moves-closer-to-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=4046","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Merbok Moves Closer to China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Depression 04W intensified into Tropical Storm Merbok on Sunday as it moved closer to the coast of China.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Merbok was located at latitude 19.9\u00b0N and longitude 115.7\u00b0E which put it about 220 miles (360 km) south-southeast of Hong Kong.\u00a0 Merbok was moving toward the north-northwest at 16 m.p.h. (26 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 999 mb.<\/p>\n<p>The structure of Tropical Storm Merbok is asymmetrical.\u00a0 Most of the thunderstorms are occurring east and south of the center of circulation.\u00a0 A primary rainband curves about halfway around the southeastern side of the center.\u00a0 Additional bands of showers and thunderstorms exist outside the core in southeastern half of Merbok.\u00a0 There are bands in the northwestern half of the circulation but they consists primarily of low clouds and showers.\u00a0 The thunderstorms in the primary rainband are producing upper level divergence which is pumping out mass to the south of Tropical Storm Merbok.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Merbok is moving through an environment that is marginally favorable for intensification.\u00a0 It is moving over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 Merbok is moving under the eastern end of an upper level ridge which is producing northerly winds which are blowing toward the top of the tropical storm.\u00a0 Those northerly winds are creating moderate vertical wind shear, but they are also enhancing the upper level divergence to the south of Merbok.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Merbok appears to be pulling some drier air from China into the northwestern part of the circulation.\u00a0 The combination of moderate vertical wind shear and drier air could be the reason for the asymmetrical distribution of thunderstorms.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Merbok has a chance to intensify a little more before it makes landfall.\u00a0 The effects of the moderate vertical wind shear and drier air should limit any intensification and Merbok is likely to remain a tropical storm until it makes landfall.<\/p>\n<p>Merbok is moving around the western end of a subtropical ridge which is steering the tropical storm toward the north-northwest.\u00a0 That general motion is expected to continue for another day or so.\u00a0 On its anticipated track the center of Tropical Storm Merbok will reach the coast of China between Hong Kong and Shantou in 12 to 18 hours.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Merbok will bring gust winds and locally heavy rain.\u00a0 When Merbok moves inland over eastern China, it will reach the westerly winds in the middle latitudes and those winds will turn the tropical storm toward the east.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Depression 04W intensified into Tropical Storm Merbok on Sunday as it moved closer to the coast of China.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Merbok was located at latitude 19.9\u00b0N and longitude 115.7\u00b0E which put it about 220 miles (360 km) south-southeast of Hong Kong.\u00a0 Merbok was moving toward [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[697,43,127,44,42,96,699,63,698],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4046"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=4046"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4046\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":4047,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4046\/revisions\/4047"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=4046"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=4046"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=4046"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
