{"id":4300,"date":"2017-07-21T03:33:59","date_gmt":"2017-07-21T03:33:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=4300"},"modified":"2017-07-21T03:33:59","modified_gmt":"2017-07-21T03:33:59","slug":"tropical-storms-fernanda-and-greg-continue-west-across-the-pacific","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=4300","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storms Fernanda and Greg Continue West Across the Pacific"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storms Fernanda and Greg continued to move west across the Pacific Ocean on Thursday.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Storm Fernanda was located at latitude 18.4\u00b0N and longitude 141.4\u00b0W which put it about 900 miles (1445 km) east of Hilo, Hawaii.\u00a0 Fernanda was moving toward the west at 12 m.p.h. (19 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 65 m.p.h. (105 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1000 mb.<\/p>\n<p>At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Storm Greg was located at latitude 14.3\u00b0N and longitude 117.4\u00b0W which put it about 770 miles (1240 km) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California.\u00a0 Greg was moving toward the west at 10 m.p.h. (16 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum wind speed was 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 65 m.p.h. (105 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1003 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Fernanda is moving through an environment that is unfavorable for intensification.\u00a0 Fernanda is moving over water where the Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is near 26\u00b0C.\u00a0 An upper level trough northeast of Hawaii is producing southwesterly winds which are causing strong vertical wind shear over Fernanda.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Fernanda has a strong low level circulation but the vertical wind shear will blow the tops off any new thunderstorms that form.\u00a0 The shear is likely to cause Fernanda to continue to weaken and the low level circulation is likely to gradually spin down.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Greg did not intensify much on Thursday but recent satellite images seem to indicate that Greg may be getting more organized.\u00a0 A primary band of showers and thunderstorms has wrapped about two thirds of the way around the eastern and northern sides of the center of circulation.\u00a0 Upper level outflow from Tropical Storm Fernanda, which is farther west and an upper level low northwest of Greg were generating strong southerly winds which were blowing toward the top of the tropical storm.\u00a0 Those winds were causing strong vertical wind shear over Tropical Storm Greg.\u00a0 The upper low appears to be moving farther away from Greg.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Greg is moving over water where the SST is near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 If the vertical shear diminishes and the circulation organizes, then there is sufficient energy in the upper ocean to allow Greg to intensify into a hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>A subtropical ridge north of Greg is steering the tropical storm toward the west.\u00a0 A general westerly motion is expected to continue during the next several days.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Greg could take a path similar to the track of Tropical Storm Fernanda.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storms Fernanda and Greg continued to move west across the Pacific Ocean on Thursday.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Storm Fernanda was located at latitude 18.4\u00b0N and longitude 141.4\u00b0W which put it about 900 miles (1445 km) east of Hilo, Hawaii.\u00a0 Fernanda was moving toward the west at 12 [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,2],"tags":[422,429,39,423,431,23,24,727,733],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4300"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=4300"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4300\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":4301,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/4300\/revisions\/4301"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=4300"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=4300"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=4300"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
