{"id":5285,"date":"2017-12-18T04:51:59","date_gmt":"2017-12-18T04:51:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=5285"},"modified":"2017-12-18T04:51:59","modified_gmt":"2017-12-18T04:51:59","slug":"tropical-storm-kai-tak-weakens-over-the-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=5285","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Kai-tak Weakens Over the Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Kai-tak weakened as it passed over the Philippines.\u00a0\u00a0 Kai-tak dropped heavy rain which caused floods and mudslides before it weakened.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Kai-tak was located at latitude 10.5\u00b0N and longitude 119.1\u00b0E which put it about 75 miles (120 km) northeast of Puerto Princesa, Philippines.\u00a0 Kai-tak was moving toward the west-southwest at 10 m.p.h. (16 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1000 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Moving over islands of the central Philippines disrupted parts of the circulation of Tropical Storm Kai-tak.\u00a0 In addition an upper level ridge produced strong easterly winds which blew across the top of the circulation.\u00a0 Those winds caused moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The strong upper level winds periodically weakened the thunderstorms near the core of the circulation.\u00a0 The upper level winds slowed at times and more storms developed near the center of Tropical Storm Kai-tak.\u00a0 The persistent vertical wind shear weakened the low level circulation.<\/p>\n<p>More thunderstorms developed near the center of Tropical Storm Kai-tak during recent hours, but the circulation remains asymmetrical.\u00a0 The new storms were forming west of the center of circulation.\u00a0 There were only a few thin bands of showers in the eastern half of the circulation.\u00a0 The strongest winds were occurring in the thunderstorms west of the center of Tropical Storm Kai-tak.\u00a0 The Japan Meteorological Agency was maintaining a classification of a tropical storm.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Kai-tak will move through an environment only marginally favorable for intensification.\u00a0 Kai-tak will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will continue to produce strong easterly winds and there will continue to be moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Kai-tak could maintain its intensify, if the wind shear does not increase.\u00a0 However, if the upper level winds get stronger, then they could blow the top off of the circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Kai-tak is moving south of a subtropical ridge which is steering the tropical storm toward the west-southwest.\u00a0 The west-southwesterly motion is forecast to continue for another day or two.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Kai-tak will move across Palawan and over the South China Sea.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Kai-tak weakened as it passed over the Philippines.\u00a0\u00a0 Kai-tak dropped heavy rain which caused floods and mudslides before it weakened.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Kai-tak was located at latitude 10.5\u00b0N and longitude 119.1\u00b0E which put it about 75 miles (120 km) northeast of Puerto Princesa, Philippines.\u00a0 [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[910,918,919,71,920,96,909,911],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5285"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=5285"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5285\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":5286,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5285\/revisions\/5286"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=5285"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=5285"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=5285"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
