{"id":5436,"date":"2018-01-15T05:11:52","date_gmt":"2018-01-15T05:11:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=5436"},"modified":"2018-01-15T05:48:19","modified_gmt":"2018-01-15T05:48:19","slug":"tropical-cyclone-berguitta-intensifies-into-equivalent-of-a-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=5436","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Berguitta Intensifies Into Equivalent of a Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Berguitta intensified into the equivalent of a hurricane\/typhoon on Sunday.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Sunday the center of Tropical Cyclone Berguitta was located at latitude 17.8\u00b0S and longitude 63.1\u00b0E which put it about 415 miles (670 km) east-northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius.\u00a0 Berguitta was nearly stationary.\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 985 mb.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation of Tropical Cyclone Berguitta continued to get better organized on Sunday.\u00a0 An eye appeared intermittently at the center of circulation.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by an elliptical ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in those storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of the circulation.\u00a0 Storms near the center of Berguitta were generating upper level divergence which was pumping mass away from the center of circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Berguitta will continue to move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next several days.\u00a0 Berguitta will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 The upper level winds are weak and there is little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Berguitta will continue to strengthen and it could intensify into the equivalent of a major hurricane.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Berguitta is moving in a region where the steering winds are weak.\u00a0 Berguitta moved little on Sunday.\u00a0 A subtropical ridge south of Berguitta is forecast to steer the tropical cyclone slowly westward during the next 24 to 48 hours.\u00a0 Berguitta will near the western end of the ridge in about two days and it is likely to move toward the southwest after that time.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Tropical Cyclone Berguitta could reach Mauritius within 72 hours.<\/p>\n<p>The core of Tropical Cyclone Berguitta could move very close to Mauritius and La Reunion.\u00a0 Berguitta could be the equivalent of a major hurricane at that time.\u00a0 It has the potential to cause major wind damage, a storm surge, heavy rain and floods.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere over the South Indian Ocean microwave images of Invest 99S depicted a structure that looked very much like a tropical cyclone.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Sunday the center of Invest 99S was centered at latitude 15.1\u00b0S and longitude 41.6\u00b0E which put it about 75 miles (120 km) east of Lumbo, Mozambique.\u00a0 Microwave satellite images showed a clear area at the center of circulation surrounded by broken ring of showers and thunderstorms.\u00a0 A primary rainband wrapped around the eastern side of the circulation and secondary bands of showers and thunderstorms existed in all quadrants of the circulation.\u00a0 However, no official government agency is classifying the system as a tropical cyclone at the current time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Berguitta intensified into the equivalent of a hurricane\/typhoon on Sunday.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Sunday the center of Tropical Cyclone Berguitta was located at latitude 17.8\u00b0S and longitude 63.1\u00b0E which put it about 415 miles (670 km) east-northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius.\u00a0 Berguitta was nearly stationary.\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[48,2],"tags":[313,944,943,84,85,946,74,86,300,945,612,361,942],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5436"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=5436"}],"version-history":[{"count":3,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5436\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":5439,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/5436\/revisions\/5439"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=5436"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=5436"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=5436"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
