{"id":5449,"date":"2018-01-17T04:52:57","date_gmt":"2018-01-17T04:52:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=5449"},"modified":"2018-01-17T04:52:57","modified_gmt":"2018-01-17T04:52:57","slug":"tropical-cyclone-berguitta-moves-closer-to-mauritius","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=5449","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Berguitta Moves Closer to Mauritius"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Berguitta moved closer to Mauritius and La Reunion on Tuesday.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday the center of Tropical Cyclone Berguitta was located at latitude 18.4\u00b0S and longitude 60.3\u00b0E which put it about 250 miles (400 km) east-northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius.\u00a0 Berguitta was moving toward the southwest at 4 m.p.h. (6 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 90 m.p.h. (145 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 115 m.p.h. (185 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 973 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Berguitta weakened a little on Tuesday but it remained a dangerous tropical cyclone.\u00a0 An upper level ridge southeast of Berguitta produced easterly winds which caused some vertical wind shear over the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 Satellite imagery also suggested that Berguitta could have gone through an eyewall replacement cycle.\u00a0 The combination of increased wind shear and a possible eyewall replacement cycle altered the structure of Berguitta.\u00a0 Microwave satellite images intermittently indicated the presence of an eye at the center of circulation.\u00a0 However, almost all of the stronger thunderstorms were occurring west of the center of circulation.\u00a0 The bands in the eastern half of the circulation consisted primarily of low clouds and showers.\u00a0 The increased shear probably caused the asymmetrical distribution of storms.<\/p>\n<p>Berguitta will move through an environment supportive of a tropical cyclone during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 It will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 The upper level ridge will continue to produce vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The wind shear will likely prevent Berguitta from intensifying significantly.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Berguitta is forecast to weaken slowly during the next 24 hours, but it could maintain most of its intensity, since it is still over warm water.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Berguitta is moving around the western end of a subtropical ridge which is steering the tropical cyclone toward the southwest.\u00a0 A general southwesterly motion is forecast to continue for another day or two.\u00a0 On its anticipated track the center of Tropical Cyclone Berguitta could reach Mauritius in 24 hours.\u00a0 Berguitta is likely to be the equivalent of a hurricane\/typhoon when it reaches Mauritius.\u00a0 It will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause serious flooding.\u00a0 The strong winds could generate a storm surge of 4 to 7 feet (1 to 2 meters) at the coast.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Berguitta could reach La Reunion within 36 hours.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Berguitta moved closer to Mauritius and La Reunion on Tuesday.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday the center of Tropical Cyclone Berguitta was located at latitude 18.4\u00b0S and longitude 60.3\u00b0E which put it about 250 miles (400 km) east-northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius.\u00a0 Berguitta was moving toward the southwest at 4 m.p.h.
