{"id":6160,"date":"2018-07-08T18:10:59","date_gmt":"2018-07-08T18:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=6160"},"modified":"2018-07-08T18:10:59","modified_gmt":"2018-07-08T18:10:59","slug":"tropical-storm-chris-develops-south-of-cape-hatteras-beryl-nears-lesser-antilles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=6160","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Chris Develops South of Cape Hatteras, Beryl Nears Lesser Antilles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Chris developed south of Cape Hatteras on Sunday morning, while Tropical Storm Beryl neared the Lesser Antilles.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Chris was located at latitude 32.9\u00b0N and longitude 75.0\u00b0W which put it about 160 miles (260 km) south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.\u00a0 Chris was nearly stationary.\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1006 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Thunderstorms developed closer to the center of circulation on Sunday morning and the National Hurricane Center designated former Tropical Depression Three as Tropical Storm Chris.\u00a0 The circulation of Chris was organizing quickly.\u00a0 A band of showers and thunderstorms was wrapping around the center of circulation.\u00a0 Several other rainbands were revolving around the core of the tropical storm.\u00a0 The bands northwest of the center were weaker because there was drier air in that part of Chris.\u00a0 The storms near the center of circulation were beginning to generate upper level divergence.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Chris will remain in an environment favorable for intensification for the next two or three days.\u00a0 The water in the upper portion of the Atlantic Ocean east of the Carolinas is warmer than normal.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Chris will be over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 Chris will be southeast of an upper level trough over the northeastern quarter of the U.S. and it will be under a small upper level ridge.\u00a0 The upper level winds will be weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Chris will continue to intensify and it could strengthen to a hurricane in the next day or two.<\/p>\n<p>Since Tropical Storm Chris is under the small upper level ridge, the steering winds are weak.\u00a0 Chris may not move much during the next 24 to 48 hours.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Chris is forecast to linger of the coast of the Carolinas for several days.\u00a0 Eventually an upper level trough will approach from the west and start to push Chris toward the northeast.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Beryl was nearing the Lesser Antilles on Sunday morning.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Beryl was located at latitude 14.4\u00b0N and longitude 57.9\u00b0W which put it about 210 miles (335 km) east of Martinique.\u00a0 Beryl was moving toward the west-northwest at 23 m.p.h. (37 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1007 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Warnings were in effect for Dominica and Guadeloupe.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Watches were in effect for Saba, St. Eustatius, St. Maarten, St. Martin, Martinique, St. Lucia, and St. Barthelemy.<\/p>\n<p>Thunderstorms continued to develop near the center of Tropical Storm Beryl on Sunday morning and the weakening trend halted at least temporarily.\u00a0 Beryl remained a small tropical storm.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force only extended out about 45 miles (75 km) from the center of circulation.\u00a0 There were several bands of showers and thunderstorms in the eastern half of Tropical Storm Beryl.\u00a0 The bands in the western half of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and low clouds.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Beryl is forecast to into a region where the easterly winds in the lower levels are stronger.\u00a0 That would increase the vertical wind shear and make it difficult for the circulation to stay vertically coherent.\u00a0 Beryl will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 So, there will be enough energy in the upper ocean to support a tropical storm if the wind shear is not too strong.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Beryl is forecast to weaken when it moves over the eastern Caribbean Sea, but that will depend on how strong the vertical shear gets.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Beryl is moving south of the subtropical high over the Atlantic Ocean which is steering Beryl toward the west-northwest.\u00a0 A general motion toward the west-northwest is forecast to continue for several more days.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Beryl will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to St. Lucia, Martinique, Dominica and Guadeloupe during the next few hours,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Chris developed south of Cape Hatteras on Sunday morning, while Tropical Storm Beryl neared the Lesser Antilles.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Chris was located at latitude 32.9\u00b0N and longitude 75.0\u00b0W which put it about 160 miles (260 km) south of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.\u00a0 Chris was [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2],"tags":[378,387,377,386,535,31,1067,138,1079,145,537,144,51,98,1072,26,538,100,22,1075,99,1074,1076,536,1077,1073,97,1066,1078,213],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6160"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=6160"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6160\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":6161,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6160\/revisions\/6161"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=6160"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=6160"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=6160"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
