The core of Super Typhoon Maysak passed north of Yap on Tuesday.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Super Typhoon Maysak was located at latitude 10.7\u00b0N and longitude 137.2\u00b0E which put it about 90 miles north-northwest of Yap and about 1000 miles east-southeast of Luzon.\u00a0 Maysak was moving toward the west-northwest at 13 m.p.h.\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 160 m.p.h., which made Maysak the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.\u00a0 There were gusts to 195 m.p.h. and the minimum surface pressure was 918 mb.<\/p>\n
Maysak continues to exhibit a very impressive structure.\u00a0 It is very symmetrical and there is strong upper level outflow in all directions.\u00a0 Some satellite imagery suggests the circulation may have developed concentric eyewalls and that could mean an eyewall replacement is underway.\u00a0 If so, the intensity could fluctuate while the inner eyewall weakens and the inflow becomes focused on the outer eyewall.\u00a0 The overall environment around Maysak is very supportive of an intense tropical cyclone.\u00a0 The upper level winds are relatively light and it is over warm Sea Surface Temperatures.\u00a0 Maysak could maintain super typhoon intensity for another day or two.\u00a0 It could move into an area of stronger upper level winds in several days, which would increase the vertical wind shear.<\/p>\n
A subtropical ridge is expected to continue to steer Maysak toward the west-northwest.\u00a0 On the projected track, Maysak could approach Luzon in about four days.\u00a0 Even if it weakens, it is likely to be a typhoon when it nears the northern Philippines.\u00a0 It has the potential to bring strong winds and locally heavy rains.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
