{"id":6437,"date":"2018-08-21T04:10:43","date_gmt":"2018-08-21T04:10:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=6437"},"modified":"2018-08-21T04:10:43","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T04:10:43","slug":"large-typhoon-soulik-nears-ryukyu-islands-cimaron-brushes-northern-marianas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=6437","title":{"rendered":"Large Typhoon Soulik Nears Ryukyu Islands, Cimaron Brushes Northern Marianas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Large Typhoon Soulik neared the Ryukyu Islands on Monday night, while Typhoon Cimaron brushed the Northern Mariana Islands.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Typhoon Soulik was located at latitude 28.0\u00b0N and longitude 131.7\u00b0E which put it about 160 miles (260 km) south-southeast of Yaku Shima, Japan.\u00a0 Soulik was moving toward the northwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 115 m.p.h. (185 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 135 m.p.h. (215 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 952 mb.<\/p>\n<p>A large circular eye with a diameter of 50 miles (80 km) developed at the center of Typhoon Soulik.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in the ring of storms.\u00a0 Several bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Typhoon Soulik.\u00a0 The strongest rainbands were occurring in the eastern half of the circulation.\u00a0 Winds around the core Soulik were generating strong upper level divergence which was pumping mass away from the typhoon.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Soulik has a large circulation.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extend out about 70 miles (110 km) from the center of circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extend out about 230 miles (370 km) from the center.\u00a0 The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Soulik was 20.6.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 23.5 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 44.1.<\/p>\n<p>The large symmetrical structure of Typhoon Soulik will allow it to maintain its intensity for a longer period than a smaller tropical cyclone.\u00a0 Soulik will move through an environment during the next 24 to 36 hours that will support a strong typhoon.\u00a0 It will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 28\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through an environment where the vertical wind shear will not be too strong.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Soulik will move around the western end of ridge centered north of Japan.\u00a0 The ridge will steer Soulik toward the northwest for another 24 to 36 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Typhoon Soulik will move over the northern Ryukyu Islands on Tuesday.\u00a0 Soulik could approach South Korea within 36 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Cimaron brushed the northernmost Mariana Islands on Monday.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Typhoon Cimaron was located at latitude 20.5\u00b0N and longitude 144.5\u00b0E which put it about 90 miles (145 km) north-northwest of Agrihan.\u00a0 Cimaron was moving toward the west-northwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h.
