{"id":6931,"date":"2018-10-24T03:43:15","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T03:43:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=6931"},"modified":"2018-10-24T03:43:15","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T03:43:15","slug":"typhoon-yutu-intensifies-rapidly-to-equivalent-of-cat-4-hurricane-imminent-threat-to-marianas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=6931","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Yutu Intensifies Rapidly to Equivalent of Cat. 4 Hurricane, Imminent Threat to Marianas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Yutu intensified rapidly on Tuesday into the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale and Yutu posed an imminent threat to the Marianas.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Typhoon Yutu was located at latitude 13.6\u00b0N and longitude 147.5\u00b0E which put it about 155 miles (255 km) east-southeast of Rota.\u00a0 Yutu was moving toward the northwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 150 m.p.h. (240 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 185 m.p.h. (295 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 935 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Warnings are in effect for Rota, Saipan and Tinian.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Warnings are in effect for Guam, Alamagan, Pagan and Agrihan.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Yutu intensified rapidly during the past 24 hours.\u00a0 A circular eye developed at the center of Yutu.\u00a0 The eye is surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Numerous bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Typhoon Yutu.\u00a0 Storms near the core were generating strong upper level divergence which was pumping mass away from the typhoon in all directions.\u00a0 The removal of mass allowed the surface pressure to decrease rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Yutu has a large circulation.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extend out about 65 miles (105 km) from the center of circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extend out about 210 miles (335 km) from the center.\u00a0 The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Yutu is 31.6.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) is 20.8 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size index (HWISI) is 52.4.\u00a0 Typhoon Yutu is capable of causing widespread extensive damage.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Yutu will move through an environment favorable for further intensification during the next several days.\u00a0 Yutu will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 31\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there is little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Yutu could intensify into the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale.\u00a0 At some point a rainband will wrap around the existing eye and eyewall, and an eyewall replacement cycle will occur.\u00a0 Yutu will weaken during the eyewall replacement cycle, but the typhoon could strengthen afterwards if it remains in an environment favorable for intensification.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Yutu will move around the southwestern portion of a ridge of high pressure over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The ridge will steer Yutu in a general west-northwesterly direction.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Typhoon Yutu will reach the Northern Marianas in about 12 hours.\u00a0 The core of Yutu will pass between Rota and Tinian.\u00a0 Rota, Tinian and Saipan are likly to have winds to typhoon force.\u00a0 Typhoon Yutu will be capable of causing extensive damage in those locations.\u00a0 Guam, Alamagan, Pagan and Agrihan are likely to receive winds to tropical storm force.\u00a0 Wind speeds will be stronger on the northern part of Guam and the damage potential is greater there than it is for the southern part of Guam.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Yutu intensified rapidly on Tuesday into the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale and Yutu posed an imminent threat to the Marianas.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Typhoon Yutu was located at latitude 13.6\u00b0N and longitude 147.5\u00b0E which put it about 155 miles (255 km) east-southeast [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[888,179,1202,43,45,650,44,136,46,1173,104,194,105,42,106,1340,889,1337],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6931"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=6931"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6931\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":6932,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/6931\/revisions\/6932"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=6931"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=6931"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=6931"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
