{"id":7693,"date":"2019-04-29T21:54:37","date_gmt":"2019-04-29T21:54:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=7693"},"modified":"2019-04-29T21:54:37","modified_gmt":"2019-04-29T21:54:37","slug":"tropical-cyclone-fani-strengthens-to-equivalent-of-hurricane-typhoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=7693","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Fani Strengthens to Equivalent of Hurricane\/Typhoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Fani strengthened to the equivalent of a hurricane\/typhoon over the Bay of Bengal on Monday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Cyclone Fani was located at latitude 11.4\u00b0N and longitude 86.9\u00b0E which put it about 800 miles (1290 km) south of Kolkata (Calcutta), India.\u00a0 Fani was moving toward the north at 10 m.p.h. (16 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 974 mb.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Tropical Cyclone Fani exhibited greater organization on Monday.\u00a0 The inner end of a rainband wrapped most of the way around the eastern and northern sides of the center of circulation.\u00a0 Although there was still a break on the southwestern side of the center, an eye may have been forming at the center of circulation.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Tropical Cyclone Fani and the circulation was much more symmetrical.\u00a0 Storm around the core were generating upper level divergence which was pumping mass away from the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out about 140 miles (225 km) from the center of circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fani will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next several days.\u00a0 Fani will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 31\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the axis of an upper level ridge where the winds are weak.\u00a0 Very warm water and little vertical wind shear will allow Tropical Cyclone Fani to intensify during the next 48 hours.\u00a0 It could intensify rapidly once the inner core is fully developed.\u00a0 Fani is likely to strengthen into the equivalent of a major hurricane during the next\u00a0 2 to 3 days.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Fani will move around the western end of a subtropical ridge during the next few days.\u00a0 The ridge will steer Fani in a generally northward direction.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Tropical Cyclone Fani could approach the coast of India southwest of Kolkata in three or four days.\u00a0 Fani could be the equivalent of a major hurricane when it approaches the coast.\u00a0 Tropical Cyclone Fani has the potential to cause major wind damage.\u00a0 It will also generate a dangerous storm surge along the coast.\u00a0 Heavy rain will create the potential for fresh water flooding in inland locations.\u00a0 The greatest risks at this time are for the Indian states of Orissa and West Bengal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Fani strengthened to the equivalent of a hurricane\/typhoon over the Bay of Bengal on Monday.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Cyclone Fani was located at latitude 11.4\u00b0N and longitude 86.9\u00b0E which put it about 800 miles (1290 km) south of Kolkata (Calcutta), India.\u00a0 Fani was moving toward the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[48,2],"tags":[367,135,1494,1493,368,908,1323,1492,1495],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7693"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=7693"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7693\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":7694,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7693\/revisions\/7694"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=7693"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=7693"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=7693"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
