{"id":7944,"date":"2019-07-16T22:07:02","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T22:07:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=7944"},"modified":"2019-07-16T22:07:02","modified_gmt":"2019-07-16T22:07:02","slug":"tropical-storm-danas-forms-east-of-luzon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=7944","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Danas Forms East of Luzon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Danas formed east of Luzon on Tuesday.\u00a0 A distinct low level center of circulation developed in an area of low pressure east of Luzon and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Danas.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Danas was located at latitude 17.5\u00b0N and longitude 123.1\u00b0E which put it about 80 miles (130 km) east of Tuguegarao, Philippines.\u00a0 Danas was moving toward the west at 4 m.p.h. (6 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 994 mb.<\/p>\n<p>The distribution of thunderstorms around Tropical Storm Danas was highly asymmetrical.\u00a0 There were a few thunderstorms just to the southwest of the center of circulation, but most of the thunderstorms were occurring in a band on the far western edge of the circulation around Danas.\u00a0 Bands in other parts of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Danas was moving around the southeastern portion of an upper level ridge over east Asia.\u00a0 The ridge was producing strong easterly winds which were blowing across the top of the circulation around Danas.\u00a0 The easterly winds were causing strong vertical wind shear and the wind shear was causing the asymmetric distribution of thunderstorms.\u00a0 The circulation around Tropical Storm Danas was large.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out about 200 miles (320 km) from the center of circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Danas will move into an environment that is only marginally favorable for intensification.\u00a0 Danas will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 31\u00b0C.\u00a0 So, there is plenty of energy in the upper ocean.\u00a0 The strong upper level easterly winds are expected to weaken somewhat during the next several days.\u00a0 If those winds weaken, then there will be less vertical wind shear and Tropical Storm Danas could strengthen.\u00a0 If the upper level winds remain strong, then Danas will not strengthen and it could weaken to a tropical depression.\u00a0 The forecast is for very slow intensification during the next 24 to 48 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Since there are not a lot of taller thunderstorms near the center of Tropical Storm Danas, it will be steered by the winds in the lower troposphere.\u00a0 Danas will move around the western end of a subtropical ridge over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The ridge will turn Danas toward the north on Wednesday.\u00a0 On its anticipated track the center of Tropical Storm Danas will remain east of Luzon.\u00a0 The center of Danas could be near southeastern Taiwan in 24 to 36 hours.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Danas could be near the east coast of China in about three days.\u00a0 The primary risks will be locally heavy rain and flash floods.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Danas formed east of Luzon on Tuesday.\u00a0 A distinct low level center of circulation developed in an area of low pressure east of Luzon and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Danas.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Danas was located at latitude 17.5\u00b0N [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[442,43,1548,44,103,64,1092,130,42,1547,443],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7944"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=7944"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7944\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":7945,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7944\/revisions\/7945"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=7944"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=7944"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=7944"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
