{"id":8572,"date":"2019-10-07T03:12:49","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T03:12:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=8572"},"modified":"2019-10-07T03:12:49","modified_gmt":"2019-10-07T03:12:49","slug":"typhoon-hagibis-rapidly-intensifies-into-equivalent-of-major-hurricane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=8572","title":{"rendered":"Typhoon Hagibis Rapidly Intensifies Into Equivalent of Major Hurricane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Hagibis rapidly intensified into the equivalent of a major hurricane east of the Marianas on Sunday night.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the cener of Typhoon Hagibis was located at latitude 15.3\u00b0N and longitude 148.8\u00b0E which put it about 320 miles (515 km) east-northeast of Guam.\u00a0 Hagibis was moving toward the west-northwest at 19 m.p.h. (31 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 115 m.p.h. (185 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 145 m.p.h. (230 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 953 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Warnings were in effect for Tinian, Saipan, Alamagan and Pagan.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Warnings were in effect for Rota and Agrihan.\u00a0 A Tropical Storm Watch was in effect for Guam.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Hagibis intensified very rapidly on Sunday night.\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed increased from 75 m.p.h. (120 km\/h) to 115 m.p.h. (185 km\/h) in six hours.\u00a0 A small circular eye formed at the center of Hagibis and a ring of strong thunderstorms surrounded the eye.\u00a0 The strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of the typhoon.\u00a0 Storms near the core were generating strong upper level divergence which was pumping mass away in all directions.\u00a0 The removal of mass was allowing the minimum surface pressure to decrease rapidly.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Typhoon Hagibis was increasing in size.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 50 miles (80 km) from the center of circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 175 miles (280 km) from the center.\u00a0 The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Hagibis was 20.2.\u00a0 The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 18.1 and the Hurricane Wind intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 38,3,\u00a0 Typhoon Hagibis was capable of causing major damage.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Hagibis will continue to move through an environment very favorable for intensification for another 24 to 36 hours.\u00a0 Hagibis will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Hagibis could continue to intensify rapidly and it could strengthen into the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 At some point a rainband is likely to wrap around the existing eye and eyewall and an eyewall replacement cycle will end the intensification of Typhoon Hagibis.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Hagibis will move around the southwestern part of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high will steer Hagibis toward the west-northwest during the next 12 to 24 hours.\u00a0 Hagibis will turn more toward the northwest in a day or so.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Typhoon Hagibis will reach the Marianas in about 12 hours.\u00a0 The center of Hagibis is likely to pass north of Saipan.\u00a0 Typhoon Hagibis will bring strong winds and heavy rain.\u00a0 It will be capable of causing major damage to the Northern Marianas.\u00a0 Typhoon Hagibis could approach southwestern Japan in four or five days.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Typhoon Hagibis rapidly intensified into the equivalent of a major hurricane east of the Marianas on Sunday night.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the cener of Typhoon Hagibis was located at latitude 15.3\u00b0N and longitude 148.8\u00b0E which put it about 320 miles (515 km) east-northeast of Guam.\u00a0 Hagibis was moving toward the west-northwest at [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[178,179,1202,45,1730,650,44,136,1173,104,105,106,1731,531],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8572"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=8572"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8572\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":8573,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/8572\/revisions\/8573"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=8572"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=8572"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=8572"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
