{"id":9044,"date":"2019-12-24T04:08:53","date_gmt":"2019-12-24T04:08:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9044"},"modified":"2019-12-24T04:08:53","modified_gmt":"2019-12-24T04:08:53","slug":"phanfone-strengthens-to-a-typhoon-closing-in-on-central-philippines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9044","title":{"rendered":"Phanfone Strengthens to a Typhoon, Closing in on Central Philippines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Storm Phanfone strengthened to a typhoon as it closed in on the central Philippines on Monday night.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Monday the center of Typhoon Phanfone was located at latitude 10.9\u00b0N and longitude 126.9\u00b0E which put it about 80 miles (130 km) east of Guiuan, Philippines.\u00a0 Phanfone was moving toward the west at 18 m.p.h. (29 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 80 m.p.h. (130 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 981 mb.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Phanfone strengthened on Monday.\u00a0 The circulation became more symmetrical and an eye began to form at the center of Phanfone.\u00a0 A ring of strong thunderstorms surrounded the eye and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Phanfone.\u00a0 Storms near the core were generating upper level divergence which was pumping mass away from the typhoon.\u00a0 The circulation around Typhoon Phanfone was relatively small.\u00a0 Winds to typhoon force extended out 20 miles (30 km) from the center of circulation.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 100 miles (160 km) from the center.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Phanfone will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next few hours.\u00a0 Phanfone will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and the will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Typhoon Phanfone will continue to intensify until it makes landfall in the central Philippines.\u00a0 Phanfone will begin to weaken when the center moves over land.\u00a0 It could regain some strength while the center passes over the Visayan Sea.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Phanfone will move south of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high will steer Phanfone toward the west-northwest during the next several days.\u00a0 On it anticipated track the center of Typhoon Phanfone will pass over southern Samar near Guiuan in a few hours.\u00a0 The core of Phanfone will also pass near Tacloban and northern Leyte.\u00a0 Typhoon Phanfone will move over the Visayan Sea before moving near Roxas City and northern Panay Island.<\/p>\n<p>Typhoon Phanfone will bring strong winds to southern Samar, Leyte and northern Panay Island.\u00a0 Phanfone will drop locally heavy rain and flash floods could occur in some locations.\u00a0 Typhoon Phanfone could produce a storm surge of six feet (two meters) along portions of the coast where the wind blows the water toward the shore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Tropical Storm Phanfone strengthened to a typhoon as it closed in on the central Philippines on Monday night.\u00a0 At 10:00 p.m. EST on Monday the center of Typhoon Phanfone was located at latitude 10.9\u00b0N and longitude 126.9\u00b0E which put it about 80 miles (130 km) east of Guiuan, Philippines.\u00a0 Phanfone was moving toward the [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,5],"tags":[601,1862,912,1865,1861,64,1867,296,1866,1863,1864,602],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9044"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=9044"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9044\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9045,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9044\/revisions\/9045"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=9044"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=9044"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=9044"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
