{"id":9551,"date":"2020-05-21T17:59:57","date_gmt":"2020-05-21T17:59:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9551"},"modified":"2020-05-21T17:59:57","modified_gmt":"2020-05-21T17:59:57","slug":"tropical-cyclone-mangga-develops-northwest-of-cocos-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9551","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Cyclone Mangga Develops Northwest of Cocos Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Mangga developed over the South Indian Ocean northwest of the Cocos Islands on Thursday.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Cyclone Mangaa was located at latitude 9.4\u00b0S and longitude 93.1\u00b0E which put it about 320 miles (515 km) northwest of Cocos Island.\u00a0 Mangga was moving toward the south-southeast at 7 m.p.h. (12 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 996 mb.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Bureau of Meteorology issued a Warning for the Cocos Islands.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Mangga developed within a trough of low pressure that extended from southwest of Indonesia to western Australia.\u00a0 The trough had persisted for several days and a center of low pressure gradually formed northwest of the Cocos Islands during the past 24 hours.\u00a0 The Australian Bureau of Meteorology designated the system as Tropical Cyclone Mangga on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Tropical Cyclone Mangga was still in the process of organizing.\u00a0 The strongest thunderstorms were in a band on the western side of the circulation.\u00a0 Bands on the eastern side of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 More thunderstorms began to develop near the center of circulation on Thursday.\u00a0 Storms developing near the center started to generate upper level divergence which was pumping mass away to the west of the tropical cyclone.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 150 miles (240 km) from the center of Mangga.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Mangga will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 to 36 hours.\u00a0 Mannga will move over water where the Sea Surface temperature is near 27\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move under the northwestern part of an upper level ridge centered over Indonesia.\u00a0 The ridge will produce easterly winds which will blow toward the top of the circulation.\u00a0 Those winds will produce moderate vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The wind shear may be the reason why the bands on the eastern side of Tropical Cyclone Mangga are weaker.\u00a0 The shear will also inhibit intensification, but it will probably not be strong enough to prevent Manga from strengthening during the next 24 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Cyclone Mangga will move around the western end of a high pressure system centered north of Australia.\u00a0 The high will steer Mangga toward the southeast during the next few days.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Tropical Cyclone Mangga will pass near the Cocos Islands in about 24 hours.\u00a0 Manga will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to those islands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Cyclone Mangga developed over the South Indian Ocean northwest of the Cocos Islands on Thursday.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Cyclone Mangaa was located at latitude 9.4\u00b0S and longitude 93.1\u00b0E which put it about 320 miles (515 km) northwest of Cocos Island.\u00a0 Mangga was moving toward the south-southeast at [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[81,48,2],"tags":[1506,78,67,2024,1507,2023],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9551"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=9551"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9551\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9552,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9551\/revisions\/9552"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=9551"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=9551"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=9551"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
