{"id":9905,"date":"2020-07-28T15:51:53","date_gmt":"2020-07-28T15:51:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9905"},"modified":"2020-07-28T15:51:53","modified_gmt":"2020-07-28T15:51:53","slug":"potential-tropical-storm-prompts-warnings-for-puerto-rico-virgin-islands-leeward-islands","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9905","title":{"rendered":"Potential Tropical Storm Prompts Warnings for Puerto Rico, Virgin Islands, Leeward Islands"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A low pressure system that has the potential to organize into a tropical storm prompted the issuance of Tropical Storm Warnings for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and many of the Leeward Islands on Tuesday morning.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine was located at latitude 13.8\u00b0N and longitude 53.7\u00b0W which put it about 585 miles (940 km) east-southeast of the Leeward Islands.\u00a0 It was moving toward the west at 23 m.p.h. (37 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 1007 mb.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Tropical Storm Warnings were issued for Puerto Rico, Culebra, Vieques, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Antigua, Barbuda, the British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis, Guadeloupe, Martinique, St. Martin, Saba, St. Eustatius, and St. Maarten.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine was very broad and it stretched from the southwest toward the northeast.\u00a0 The stronger thunderstorms were occurring in the southwestern and northeastern ends of the circulation.\u00a0 There were few thunderstorms or bands in the broad middle of the low pressure system.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 200 miles (320 km) on the northern side of the circulation.\u00a0 The winds in the southern half of the low pressure system were blowing at less than tropical storm force.<\/p>\n<p>Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next two days.\u00a0 It will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through an area where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 The large broad circulation will contribute to a slow, gradual intensification.\u00a0 If thunderstorms consolidate around a center of circulation and an inner core begins to form, then the system may be designated as a tropical storm.<\/p>\n<p>Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine will move south of a subtropical high pressure system over the North Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0 The high will steer the potential tropical storm toward the west-northwest during the next several days.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine could approach the Leeward Islands on Wednesday morning.\u00a0 It could approach the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by Wednesday night.\u00a0 The large circulation means that Potential Tropical Nine will bring a prolonged period of gusty winds.\u00a0 It could also drop heavy rain and cause flash floods on some islands.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A low pressure system that has the potential to organize into a tropical storm prompted the issuance of Tropical Storm Warnings for Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and many of the Leeward Islands on Tuesday morning.\u00a0 At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Potential Tropical Cyclone Nine was located at latitude 13.8\u00b0N and [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2],"tags":[491,492,1248,1690,1619,1072,140,538,1249,1252,779,22,1075,1076,1251,1077,1073,1620,143],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9905"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=9905"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9905\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9906,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9905\/revisions\/9906"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=9905"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=9905"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=9905"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
