{"id":9973,"date":"2020-08-02T22:11:46","date_gmt":"2020-08-02T22:11:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9973"},"modified":"2020-08-02T22:11:46","modified_gmt":"2020-08-02T22:11:46","slug":"tropical-storm-isaias-slightly-stronger-hurricane-watch-issued-for-carolinas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9973","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Isaias Slightly Stronger, Hurricane Watch Issued for Carolinas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Isaias strengthened slightly on Sunday afternoon and a hurricane Watch was issued for a portion of the Carolinas&#8217; coast.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Isaias was located at latitude 27.8\u00b0N and longitude 79.8\u00b0W which put it about 65 miles (105 km) southeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida.\u00a0 Isaias was moving toward the north-northwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 70 m.p.h. (110 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 85 m.p.h. (135 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 994 mb.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">A Hurricane Watch was issued for the portion of the coast from South Santee River, South Carolina to Surf City, North Carolina.\u00a0 <strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Sebastian Inlet, Florida to Ocracoke Inlet, North Carolina.\u00a0 <\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for the portion of the coast from Ocracoke Inlet, North Carolina to Watch Hill, Rhode Island including Albemarle Sound, Pamlico Sound, Long Island and Long Island Sound.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Isaias strengthened a little on Sunday afternoon, but the middle level center of circulation was displaced to the northeast of the surface center.\u00a0 An upper level trough over the central U.S. extended to the Gulf of Mexico and it was producing westerly winds which were blowing toward the top of Isaias.\u00a0 Those winds were causing moderate vertical wind shear and they were also causing the displacement of the middle level center of Tropical Storm Isaias.\u00a0 Thunderstorms continued to develop around the middle level center of circulation.\u00a0 Those storms generated upper level divergence which pumped mass away to the east of the tropical storm.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 115 miles (185 km) on the eastern side of Isaias.\u00a0 Tropical Storm force winds only extended out 65 miles (105 km) on the western side of the circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Isaias will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Isaias will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 30\u00b0C.\u00a0 The direction of the upper level winds will shift to the southwest as the upper level trough approaches Tropical Storm Isaias.\u00a0 That will cause the vertical wind shear to decrease.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Isaias could strengthen into a hurricane, if the shear decreases.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Isaias will move around the western end of a subtropical high pressure system over the North Atlantic Ocean.\u00a0 The high will steer Isaias toward the north during the next 12 hours.\u00a0 The upper level trough will steer Tropical Storm Isaias toward the northeast on Monday.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Isaias will approach the coast of the Carolinas near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Monday night.\u00a0 Isaias could be a hurricane when it makes landfall.\u00a0 It will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to extreme eastern South Carolina, eastern North Carolina and coastal Virginia.\u00a0 Isaias will cause a storm surge of 3\u00a0 to 6 feet (1 to 2 meters) near and to the east of where the center makes landfall.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Isaias will continue to move up the East Coast toward New England.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Isaias strengthened slightly on Sunday afternoon and a hurricane Watch was issued for a portion of the Carolinas&#8217; coast.\u00a0 At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Isaias was located at latitude 27.8\u00b0N and longitude 79.8\u00b0W which put it about 65 miles (105 km) southeast of Cape Canaveral, Florida.\u00a0 Isaias [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,2],"tags":[491,492,2116,505,497,51,98,2104,504,496,1258,123,206,100,506,99,2015,2103,213],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9973"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=9973"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9973\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":9974,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/9973\/revisions\/9974"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=9973"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=9973"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=9973"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
