{"id":9977,"date":"2020-08-03T03:36:21","date_gmt":"2020-08-03T03:36:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9977"},"modified":"2020-08-03T03:36:21","modified_gmt":"2020-08-03T03:36:21","slug":"tropical-storm-hagupit-almost-a-typhoon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/jayhobgood.com\/?p=9977","title":{"rendered":"Tropical Storm Hagupit Almost a Typhoon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tropical Storm Hagupit intensified to almost typhoon strength east of Taiwan on Sunday.\u00a0 At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Typhoon Hagupit was located at latitude 25.4\u00b0N and longitude 123.2\u00b0E which put it about 130 miles (215 km) east of Taipei, Taiwan.\u00a0 Hagupit was moving toward the north-northwest at 10 m.p.h. (16 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 70 m.p.h. (110 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 85 m.p.h. (135 km\/h).\u00a0 The minimum surface pressure was 985 mb.<\/p>\n<p>The circulation around Tropical Storm Hagupit exhibited much greater organization on Sunday night.\u00a0 The inner end of a rainband wrapped around the center of circulation and an eye emerged on visible satellite imagery.\u00a0 The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.\u00a0 Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Hagupit.\u00a0 The strongest rainbands were in the eastern half of the circulation.\u00a0 Bands in the western half of the tropical storm consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds.\u00a0 Winds to tropical storm force extended out 115 miles (185 km) from the center of circulation.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Hagupit will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.\u00a0 Hagupit will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29\u00b0C.\u00a0 It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.\u00a0 Tropical Storm Hagupit will intensify into a typhoon during the next 6 to 12 hours.<\/p>\n<p>Tropical Storm Hagupit will move around the western end of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.\u00a0 The high will steer Hagupit toward the north-northwest during the next 24 to 36 hours.\u00a0 On its anticipated track Hagupit will approach the coast of China south of Shanghai near Wenzhou in about 24 hours.\u00a0 It will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to the east coast of China.\u00a0 Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, former Tropical Storm Sinlaku dropped locally heavy rain on northern Vietnam and Laos.\u00a0 At 2:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Depression Sinlaku was located at latitude 19.7\u00b0N and longitude 103.6\u00b0E which put it about 150 miles (240 km) north of Vientiane, Laos.\u00a0 Sinlaku was moving toward the west at 10 m.p.h. (16 km\/h).\u00a0 The maximum sustained wind speed was 35 m.p.h. (55 km\/h) and there were wind gusts to 45 m.p.h.
