Former Tropical Depression Fay strengthened back to a tropical storm on Wednesday evening as it moved over the North Atlantic Ocean. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Fay was located at latitude 29.8°N and longitude 40.0°W which put the center about 935 miles (1505 km) west-southwest of the Azores. Fay was moving toward the west-southwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1010 mb.
Former Tropical Depression Fay strengthened back to a tropical storm on Wednesday evening. Thunderstorms continued to develop near the center of Fay’s circulation. Thunderstorms were also occurring in bands in the eastern and northern sides of Tropical Storm Fay. Bands in the western and southern parts of Fay’s circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Storms near the center of Fay generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm.
The strongest winds were occurring in the northern side of Tropical Storm Fay. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 70 miles (110 km) in the northern half of Fay’s circulation. The winds in the southern side of Tropical Storm Fay were blowing at less than tropical storm force.
Tropical Storm Fay will move through an environment that will be somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Fay will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28°C. It will move through a region where there will be little vertical wind shear. However, Fay will also move into a region where there is drier air. The drier air will inhibit intensification, but the drier air may not be enough to prevent intensification. Tropical Storm Fay could intensify during the next 24 hours.
Tropical Storm Fay will move around the southern part of a high pressure system that is over the North Atlantic Ocean. The high pressure system will steer Fay toward the west during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Fay will move farther away from the Azores.
