Typhoon Yagi Hits Hainan

Typhoon Yagi hit Hainan on Friday morning.  At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Typhoon Yagi was located at latitude 20.2°N and longitude 109.8°E which put the center about 25 miles (40 km) west of Haikou, China.  Yagi was moving toward the west-northwest at 13 m.p.h. (20 km/h).  The maximum sustained wind speed was 140 m.p.h. (220 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 165 m.p.h. (265 km/h).  The minimum surface pressure was 928 mb.

Typhoon Yagi brought strong winds and heavy rain to Hainan on Friday morning.  The core of Typhoon Yagi moved over the northeastern part of Hainan.  A small circular eye was present at the center of Yagi’s circulation.  The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.  The strongest winds moved over the northern coastal regions of Hainan.  Bands of showers and thunderstorms revolved around the core of Yagi’s circulation.  Storms dropped heavy rain on Hainan and southern China.

The formation of concentric eyewalls on Thursday caused the size of Typhoon Yagi’s circulation to increase.  Winds to typhoon force extended out 70 miles (110 km) from the center of Yagi’s circulation.  Winds to tropical storm force extended out 185 miles (300 km) from the center of Typhoon Yagi.

The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Typhoon Yagi was 28.3.  The Hurricane Size Index (HII) was 24.9 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 53.2.  Typhoon Yagi was similar in size to Hurricane Jeanne when Jeanne hit southeast Florida in 2004.  Yagi was stronger than Jeanne was.

Typhoon Yagi will move through an environment that will be somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 12 hours.  The center of Yagi’s circulation will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30°C.  It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear.  However, Typhoon Yagi may not intensify during the next 12 hours because the core of Yagi’s circulation was somewhat disrupted as it moved across Hainan.

Typhoon Yagi will move around the southern part of a high pressure system over China.  The high pressure system will steer Yagi toward the west-northwest during the next 24 hours.  On its anticipated track, the center of Typhoon Yagi will reach northeastern Vietnam in 12 hours.  Typhoon Yagi could still be the equivalent of a major hurricane when it reaches VIetnam.

Typhoon Yagi will continue to produce strong winds and heavy rain in parts of Hainan during the  next few hours.  Yagi will be capable of causing major damage in Hainan.  Heavy rain is likely to cause floods in some locations. Typhoon Yagi will also produce strong winds and heavy rain in parts of southern China.  Yagi will produce strong winds and heavy rain in southwestern Guangdong and Guangxi.  Typhoon Yagi will bring strong winds and heavy rain to northeastern Vietnam during the weekend.  Yagi is likely to cause floods in northeastern Vietnam.  Typhoon Yagi could also cause a storm surge of up to 10 feet (3 meters) along the coast of northeastern Vietnam.

Tropical Storm Prapiroon Brings Wind and Rain to Hainan

Tropical Storm Prapiroon brought wind and rain to Hainan on Sunday.  At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Prapiroon was located at latitude 19.1°N and longitude 109.9°E which put the center about 65 miles (105 km) south-southwest of Haikou, China.  Prapiroon was moving toward the northwest at 13 m.p.h. (21 km/h).  The maximum sustained wind speed was 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 75 m.p.h. (120 km/h).  The minimum surface pressure was 992 mb.

Tropical Storm Prapiroon intensified on Sunday before the center moved over Hainan.  Microwave satellite images indicated that an eye was in the process of forming at the center of Prapiroon’s circulation as the tropical storm made landfall in Hainan.  The formative eye was surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms.  Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Tropical Storm Prapiroon.

Winds to tropical storm force extended out 70 miles (110 km) from the center of Tropical Storm Prapiroon.

The center of Tropical Storm Prapiroon made landfall on the south coast of Hainan near Lingshui.  The core of Prapiroon’s circulation moved across the center of Hainan.  Storms near the center of Tropical Storm Prapiroon brought heavy rain and strong winds to much of Hainan.  Bands in the northern part of Hainan’s circulation were also bringing gusty winds and heavy rain to parts of southern China.

Tropical Storm Prapiroon will move around the southern side of a high pressure system over southern China.  The high pressure system will steer Prapiroon toward the northwest during the next 24 hours.  On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Prapiroon will move over the Gulf of Tonkin on Monday.  The center of Prapiroon’s circulation could approach the southern coast of China in 24 hours.

Tropical Storm Prapiroon will continue to cause strong winds and locally heavy rain in Hainan during the next few hours.  Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.  Prapiroon will also bring gusty winds and heavy rain to parts of southern China and northeastern Vietnam.

Elsewhere over the Western North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Gaemi strengthened east of Luzon.  At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Gaemi was located at latitude 17.2°N and longitude 125.7°E which put the center about 525 miles (845 km) south of Ishigakijima, Japan.  Gaemi was moving toward the north-northwest at 3 m.p.h. (5 km/h).  The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km/h).  The minimum surface pressure was 992 mb.

Tropical Storm Prapiroon Forms Over South China Sea

Tropical Storm Prapiroon formed over the South China Sea on Saturday night.  At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Storm Prapiroon was located at latitude 16.3°N and longitude 111.2°E which put the center about 260 miles (460 km) south-southeast of Haikou, China.  Prapiroon was moving toward the west at 5 m.p.h. (8 km/h).  The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h).  The minimum surface pressure was 998 mb.

Former Tropical Depression 04W strengthened on Saturday night and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Prapiroon.  The circulation around Tropical Storm Prapiroon was exhibiting a little more organization.  There were not a lot of thunderstorms near the center of Prapiroon’s circulation.  Thunderstorms were occurring in bands revolving around the center of Tropical Storm Prapiroon.

Although the circulation around Tropical Storm Prapiroon was large, the area of stronger winds was relatively small.  Winds to tropical storm force extended out 60 miles (95 km) from the center of Prapiroon’s circulation.

Tropical Storm Prapiroon will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.  Prapiroon will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30°C.   It will move under the southeastern part of an upper level ridge over China.  The upper level ridge will produce northeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Prapiroon’s circulation.  Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear.  The wind shear will inhibit intensification but the shear may not be strong enough to prevent some strengthening.  Tropical Storm Prapiroon could intensify a little during the next 24 hours.

Tropical Storm Prapiroon will move around the southern part of a high pressure system over eastern China.  The high pressure system will steer Prapiroon toward the northeast during the next 24 hours.  On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Prapiroon will move toward Hainan.

Tropical Storm Prapiroon will bring gusty winds and heavy rain to Hainan during the next 24 hours.  Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.

Elsewhere over the Western North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Gaemi strengthened gradually east of the Philippines.  At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Storm Gaemi was located at latitude 17.0°N and longitude 125.5°E which put the center about 485 miles (780 km) south of Ishigakijima, Japan.  Gaemi was moving toward the west-northwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km/h).  The maximum sustained wind speed was 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h).  The minimum surface pressure was 996 mb.

Tropical Storm Gaemi Forms East of the Philippines

Tropical Storm Gaemi formed over the Western North Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines early on Saturday.   At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Storm Gaemi was located at latitude 16.1°N and longitude 128.2°E which put the center about 520 miles (840 km) south-southeast of Ishigakijima, Japan.  Gaemi was moving toward the northwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km/h).  The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h).  The minimum surface pressure was 1002 mb.

A low pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines strengthened early on Saturday and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Gaemi.  The circulation around Tropical Storm Gaemi was starting to exhibit more organization.  More thunderstorms were forming near the center of Gaemi’s circulation.  Thunderstorms were also developing in bands revolving around the center of Tropical Storm Gaemi.  Storms near the center of Gaemi started to generate upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm.

Tropical Storm Gaemi will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours.  Gaemi will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30°C.   It will move under the western part of an upper level ridge over the Western North Pacific Ocean.  The upper level ridge will produce southeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Gaemi’s circulation.  Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear, but the wind shear will not be enough to prevent intensification.  Tropical Storm Gaemi is likely to intensify gradually during the next 24 hours.  Gaemi could strengthen to a typhoon by early next week.

Tropical Storm Gaemi will move around the western part of a high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean.  The high pressure system will steer Gaemi toward the northwest during the next 24 hours.  On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Gaemi will move toward the southern Ryukyu Islands.  Gaemi could be a typhoon when it approaches the southern Ryukyu Islands early next week.

Elsewhere over the Western North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Depression 04W formed over the South China Sea.  At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Depression 04W was located at latitude 16.1°N and longitude 113.8°E which put the center about 360 miles (580 km) southeast of Haikou, China.   The tropical depression was moving toward the northwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h).   The maximum sustained wind speed was 35 m.p.h. (55 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h).   The minimum surface pressure was 999 mb.

Tropical Storm Kompasu Brings Wind and Rain to Hainan

Tropical Storm Kompasu brought wind and rain to Hainan on Wednesday. At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Kompasu was located at latitude 19.2°N and longitude 110.0°E which put it about 50 miles (80 km) southwest of Haikou, China. Kompasu was moving toward the west at 22 m.p.h. (35 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 981 mb.

Tropical Storm Kompasu brought wind and rain as it moved over Hainan on Wednesday. The strongest thunderstorms were in bands on the western side of Kompasu’s circulation. Bands on the eastern side of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 200 miles (320 km) from the center of Tropical Storm Kompasu.

Tropical Storm Kompasu was moving under the southern part of an upper level ridge over China. The ridge was producing strong easterly winds that were blowing toward the top of Kompasu’s circulation. Those winds were causing moderate vertical wind shear. The flow around the northern side of Tropical Storm Kompasu was pulling drier air from Asia into the circulation. The combination of moderate vertical wind shear and drier air was causing the stronger thunderstorms to be on the western side of Kompasu.

Tropical Storm Kompasu will move around the southern side of a high pressure system over China. The high pressure system will steer Kompasu quickly toward the west during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track the center of Kompasu will move quickly across the Gulf of Tonkin. Tropical Storm Kompasu will reach the coast of northern Vietnam in 18 hours. Gusty winds and rain will reach the coast before the center arrives because the stronger thunderstorms are on the western side of Kompasu. Vertical wind shear and drier air will prevent intensification of Tropical Storm Kompasu. Kompasu will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to northern Vietnam and Laos. Locally heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.

Tropical Storm Lionrock Drops Heavy Rain on Hainan

Tropical Storm Lionrock dropped heavy rain on Hainan on Friday. At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Tropical Storm Lionrock was located at latitude 19.1°N and longitude 110.2°E which put it about 50 miles (80 km) south of Haikou, China. Lionrock was moving toward the north at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 991 mb.

Tropical Storm Lionrock brought gusty winds and heavy rain to Hainan on Friday. The center of Lionrock was over Hainan. Bands of showers and thunderstorms on the northern and western sides of Tropical Storm Lionrock were dropping heavy rain over much of Hainan. Bands on the southern and eastern sides of Lionrock consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Storms near the center of circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. The circulation around Tropical Storm Lionrock was large. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 220 miles (350 km) from the center of circulation.

Tropical Storm Lionrock is likely to weaken during the next 12 hours while the center of circulation moves over Hainan. Lionrock will move into an environment favorable for intensification when the center moves over the Gulf of Tonkin. Lionrock will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29˚C. It will move under the western side of a small upper level ridge. The ridge will produce southerly winds that will blow toward the top of Lionrock’s circulation. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear, but the shear will not be strong enough to prevent intensification. Tropical Storm Lionrock is likely to intensify slowly after the center of circulation moves over the Gulf of Tonkin.

Tropical Storm Lionrock will move around the southwestern part of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean during the next 12 hours. The subtropical high will steer Lionrock toward the northwest. On its anticipated track the center of Tropical Storm Lionrock will move across Hainan and it will emerge over the Gulf of Tonkin on Saturday. Lionrock will continue to bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to Hainan during the next 12 hours. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations. Tropical Storm Lionrock will move south of a second high pressure system that is centered over China during the weekend. The second high pressure system will steer Lionrock toward the west. Tropical Storm Lionrock could approach the coast of northern Vietnam in 36 hours.

Elsewhere over the Western North Pacific Ocean, a former tropical depression east of the Philippines strengthened to Tropical Storm Kompasu. At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Tropical Storm Kompasu was located at latitude 13.8°N and longitude 131.5°E which put it about 570 miles (920 km) east of Daet, Philippines. Kompasu was stationary. The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 998 mb.

Tropical Storm Nangka Brings Wind and Rain to Hainan

Tropical Storm Nangka brought wind and rain to Hainan Island on Tuesday.  At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Nangka was located at latitude 19.1°N and longitude 110.0°E which put it about 70 miles south-southwest of Haikou, China.  Nangka was moving toward the west-northwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km/h).  The maximum sustained wind speed was 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 75 m.p.h. (120 km/h).  The minimum surface pressure was 987 mb.

The center of Tropical Storm Nangka moved directly across Hainan Island on Tuesday.  Nangka strengthened before it made landfall on the east coast of Hainan.  Winds to tropical storm force extended out 200 miles (320 km) from the center of Tropical Storm Nangka.  So, Nangka may have produced tropical storm force winds over much of Hainan.  Thunderstorms near the center of circulation and in bands revolving around the center were dropping heavy rain over parts of Hainan.  The heavy rain was likely to cause flash floods in some locations.

Tropical Storm Nangka will weaken while it moves across Hainan.  Nangka will move into an environment favorable for intensification for about 12 hours when it moves west of Hainan Island.  Nangka will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 29°C.  It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge over eastern Asia.  The ridge will produce easterly winds which will blow toward the top of the circulation.  Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear, but the shear will not be strong enough to prevent Tropical Storm Nangka from strengthening again.

Tropical Storm Nangka will move south of a high pressure system over eastern Asia.  The high will steer Nangka toward the west during the next 48 hours.  Tropical Storm Nangka will move west of Hainan Island in about 6 hours.  On its anticipated track Nangka will make landfall on the northern coast of Vietnam southeast of Hanoi in about 18 hours.  Tropical Storm Nangka will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to northern Vietnam.  Heavy rain will cause flash floods in some locations.
