Tropical Depression 13E Strengthens to Tropical Storm Lester, Mexico Issues Warning

Former Tropical Depression Thirteen-E strengthened to Tropical Storm Lester south of Mexico on Friday morning and the government of Mexico issued a Tropical Storm Warning for a portion of the coast. At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Tropical Storm Lester was located at latitude 13.4°N and longitude 96.1°W which put it about 160 miles (255 km) south of Puerto Angel, Mexico. Lester was moving toward the northwest at 5 m.p.h. (8 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1005 mb.

A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Punta Maldonado to Zihuatanejo, Mexico. The Tropical Storm Warning included Acapulco. A Tropical Storm Watch was in effect for the portion of the coast from Punta Maldonado to Laguna de Chacahua, Mexico. A Tropical Storm Watch was in effect from Zihuatanejo to Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico.

The circulation around former Tropical Depression Thirteen-E strengthened on Friday morning and the National Hurricane Center upgraded it to Tropical Storm Lester. Even though former Tropical Depression Thirteen-E strengthened to Tropical Storm Lester, the distribution of thunderstorms continued to be asymmetrical. Most of the thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the western half of Lester’s circulation. Bands in the eastern half of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Storms near the center of circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the west of the tropical storm. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 45 miles (75 km) in the southern half of Lester’s circulation. The winds in the northern half of the circulation were blowing at less than tropical storm force.

Tropical Storm Lester will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 36 hours. Lester will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30˚C. It will move under the southern side of an upper level ridge over Mexico. The upper level ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of the tropical depression. Those winds will cause vertical wind shear and the wind shear will inhibit intensification. Tropical Storm Lester likely to strengthen gradually during the next 36 hours.

Tropical Storm Lester will move around the southwestern part of a high pressure system that extends over Mexico. The high pressure system will steer Lester toward the northwest during the next 36 hours. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Lester will approach the southwest coast of Mexico on Saturday morning. Lester will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to Guerrero. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.

Tropical Depression Forms South of Mexico, Watch Issued

Tropical Depression Thirteen-E formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico on Thursday and the government of Mexico issued a Tropical Storm Watch for a portion of the coast. At 8:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Depression Thirteen-E was located at latitude 12.8°N and longitude 95.6°W which put it about 215 miles (345 km) south-southeast of Puerto Angel, Mexico. The tropical depression was moving toward the northwest at 3 m.p.h. (5 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 35 m.p.h. (55 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1007 mb.

A Tropical Storm Watch was in effect for the portion of the coast from Laguna de Chacahua to Zihuatanejo, Mexico. The Tropical Storm Watch includes Acapulco.

Tropical Storm Kay Forms South of Mexico

Tropical Storm Kay formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico on Sunday afternoon. At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Kay was located at latitude 14.8°N and longitude 102.5°W which put it about 225 miles (365 km) southwest of Acapulco, Mexico. Kay was moving toward the west-northwest at 13 m.p.h. (20 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1004 mb.

An area of low pressure over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico strengthened on Sunday afternoon and the National Hurricane Center designated the system as Tropical Storm Kay. There was a large counterclockwise circulation revolving around the center of Tropical Storm Kay. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Kay’s circulation, but there were not many thunderstorms close to the center. The strongest rainbands were in the southern half of Tropical Storm Kay. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 115 miles (185 km) in the northeastern quadrant of Tropical Storm Kay. The winds in the other parts of Kay’s circulation were blowing at less than tropical storm force.

Tropical Storm Kay will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 36 hours. Kay will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29˚C. It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear. Tropical Storm Kay will intensify during the next 36 hours, but the rate of intensification could be slow because of the large size of the circulation. The rate of intensification could speed up when more thunderstorms form near the center of Kay and an inner core develops. Tropical Storm Kay could strengthen to a hurricane within 36 hours.

Tropical Storm Kay will move around the southwestern part of a high pressure system over Mexico. The high pressure system will steer Kay toward the west-northwest during the next 36 hours. On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Kay will move parallel to the west coast of Mexico. Kay could move more toward the north-northwest when it reaches the western end of the high pressure system on Tuesday. Kay could approach Baja California on Wednesday.

Elsewhere over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Depression Javier moved farther away from Baja California. At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Depression Javier was located at latitude 27.2°N and longitude 121.0°W which put it about 380 miles (610 km) west of Punta Eugenia, Mexico. Javier was moving toward the west at 15 m.p.h. (16 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 35 m.p.h. (55 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1003 mb.

Tropical Storm Estelle Forms South of Mexico

Tropical Storm Estelle formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico on Friday night. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Tropical Storm Estelle was located at latitude 13.2°N and longitude 102.0°W which put it about 290 miles (470 km) south-southwest of Acapulco, Mexico. Estelle was moving toward the northwest at 10 m.p.h. (16 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1006 mb.

Winds to tropical storm force extended out 45 miles (75 km) in the northeastern quadrant of Tropical Storm Estelle. The wind in the other parts of Estelle’s circulation were blowing at less than tropical storm force.

Tropical Storm Estelle will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 36 hours. Estelle will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28˚C. It will move under an upper level ridge near the west coast of Mexico. The upper level winds are weak in the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear. Tropical Storm Estelle will intensify during the next 36 hours and it could strengthen to a hurricane.

Tropical Storm Estelle will move around the southern side of a high pressure system over Mexico. The high pressure system will steer Estelle toward the west-northwest during the next 36 hours. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Estelle will move away from the west coast of Mexico.

Elsewhere, Tropical Storm Darby weakened east-southeast of Hawaii. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Tropical Storm Darby was located at latitude 17.7°N and longitude 149.4°W which put it about 400 miles (640 km) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Darby was moving toward the west at 20 m.p.h. (32 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1006 mb.

Hurricane Bonnie Strengthens to Cat. 2

Hurricane Bonnie strengthened to Category 2 on the Saffir-Simpson Scale over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Acapulco, Mexico on Monday afternoon. At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Hurricane Bonnie was located at latitude 13.9°N and longitude 100.3°W which put it about 210 miles (335 km) south of Acapulco, Mexico. Bonnie was moving toward the west at 17 m.p.h. (28 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 100 m.p.h. (160 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 120 m.p.h. (195 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 978 mb.

Hurricane Bonnie continued to strengthen on Sunday. A small circular eye developed at the center of Bonnie’s circulation. The eye was surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Hurricane Bonnie. Storms near the core generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the west of the hurricane.

The circulation around Hurricane Bonnie was small. Winds to hurricane force extended out 25 miles (40 km) from the center of Bonnie. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 90 miles (145 km) from the center. The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Bonnie was 16.5. The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 7.6 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 24.1.

Hurricane Bonnie will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Bonnie will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28˚C. It will move under the southern side of an upper level ridge over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean. The ridge will produce northeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Bonnie’s circulation. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear. The wind shear will inhibit intensification, but Hurricane Bonnie could intensify during the next 24 hours. Bonnie could strengthen to a major hurricane on Tuesday.

Hurricane Bonnie will move south of a high pressure system over Mexico. The high pressure system will steer Bonnie toward the west-northwest during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track Hurricane Bonnie will remain southwest of the coast of Mexico.

Celia Strengthens Back to a Tropical Storm

One time Tropical Storm Celia strengthened back to a tropical storm over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico on Tuesday morning. At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Celia was located at latitude 11.6°N and longitude 99.5°W which put it about 365 miles (590 km) south of Acapulco, Mexico. Celia was moving toward the west at 12 m.p.h. (19 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1005 mb.

After passing south of Guatemala during the weekend as a weak tropical depression, former Tropical Storm Celia strengthened back to a tropical storm on Tuesday morning. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 60 miles in the northern half of Tropical Storm Celia. Winds in the southern half of Celia were blowing at less than tropical storm force. The circulation around Tropical Storm Celia continued to be poorly organized. The strongest thunderstorms were occurring in bands located west of the center of Celia’s circulation. Bands in the eastern half of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. An upper level ridge over southern Mexico was producing moderate easterly winds that were blowing across the top of Celia’s circulation. Those winds cause moderate vertical wind shear and the wind shear was causing the asymmetrical distribution of thunderstorms.

Tropical Storm Celia will move through an environment that will be only marginally favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Celia will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29˚C. However, the upper level ridge over southern Mexico will continue to cause moderate vertical wind shear. The wind shear will inhibit intensification during the next day or so. Tropical Storm Celia will move into an area where the upper level winds are weaker later this week. That will cause the vertical wind shear to diminish. Tropical Storm Celia is likely to intensify when the shear diminishes. Celia could strengthen to a hurricane by the end of the week.

Tropical Storm Celia will move south of a high pressure system over Mexico during the next 48 hours. The high pressure system will steer Celia toward the west-northwest. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Celia will move parallel to the coast of southwest Mexico.

Hurricane Rick Moves Toward Mexico

Hurricane Rick moved slowly toward the west coast of Mexico on Sunday afternoon. At 2:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Hurricane Rick was located at latitude 16.4°N and longitude 101.7°W which put it about 85 miles (135 km) south of Zihuatenajo, Mexico. Rick was moving toward the north at 6 m.p.h. (10 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 85 m.p.h. (135 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 980 mb.

A Hurricane Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Tecpan De Galeana to Punta San Telmo, Mexico. Tropical Storm Warnings were in effect for the portions of the coast from Punta San Telmo to Manzanillo and from Tecpan de Galeana to Acapulco, Mexico.

The intensity of Hurricane Rick was steady during the past few hours. The inner core of Rick’s circulation was not as well organized as it was on Saturday afternoon. There were breaks in the ring of thunderstorms surrounding the center of Hurricane Rick. Storms near the center of circulation continued to generate upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane. Bands of showers and thunderstorms revolved around the center of Rick. The circulation around Hurricane Rick was small. Winds to hurricane force extended out 15 miles (25 km) from the center of Rick. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 60 miles (95 km) from the center of circulation.

Hurricane Rick will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 12 hours. Rick will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30˚C. It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear. Hurricane Rick could intensify during the next 12 hours. However, the less organized core of Rick will limit intensification. An upper level trough near the west coast of the U.S. will produce strong southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Rick’s circulation on Monday. Those winds will cause vertical wind shear and the shear could cause Hurricane Rick to weaken as it nears the coast of Mexico.

A large upper level trough near the west coast of the U.S. will cause the high pressure system to weaken. As the high pressure system weakens, the southern part of the upper level trough will steer Rick toward the north. On its anticipated track Hurricane Rick could make landfall on the west coast of Mexico on Sunday night. Hurricane Rick will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to the portion of the coast near Zihuatanejo. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in parts of Guerrero and Michoacan on Sunday night and Monday.

Rick Rapidly Intensifies to a Hurricane South of Mexico

Former Tropical Storm Rick rapidly intensified to a hurricane south of Mexico early on Saturday. At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Hurricane Rick was located at latitude 14.3°N and longitude 101.5°W which put it about 235 miles (380 km) south of Zihuatenajo, Mexico. Rick was moving toward the north-northwest at 6 m.p.h. (10 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 990 mb.

A Hurricane Watch was in effect for the portion of the coast from Tecpan De Galeana to Punta San Telmo, Mexico. Tropical Storm Watches were in effect for the portions of the coast from Punta San Telmo to Manzanillo and from Tecpan de Galeana to Acapulco, Mexico.

Winds to tropical storm force extended out 60 miles (95 km) from the center of circulation.

At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Storm Nora was located at latitude 12.5°N and longitude 100.8°W which put it about 310 miles (500 km) south of Acapulco, Mexico. Nora was moving toward the west-northwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1003 mb.

A Hurricane Watch was issued for the portion of the coast from Lazaro Cardenas to Cabo Corrientes, Mexico. A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for the portion of the coast from Lazaro Cardenas to Tecpan de Galeana, Mexico.

The minimum surface pressure was 1003 mb.

It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge centered over Mexico. The ridge will produce northeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of Tropical Storm Linda’s circulation. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear. The wind shear will inhibit intensification but it may not strong enough to prevent Linda from strengthening.

Tropical Storm Linda will move south of a high pressure system that extends from Mexico westward over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean. The high pressure system will steer Linda toward the west-northwest during the next several days. On it anticipated track Tropical Storm Linda will move away from Mexico.

Elsewhere over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Kevin was spinning south of Baja California. At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Kevin was located at latitude 19.1°N and longitude 115.5°W which put it about 445 miles (720 km) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Kevin was moving toward the west-northwest at 10 m.p.h. (16 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1000 mb.
