Tropical Storm Lan Moves over the Sea of Japan

Tropical Storm Lan moved over the Sea of Japan on Tuesday. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Lan was located at latitude 38.7°N and longitude 135.8°E which put it about 220 miles (355 km) west-southwest of Akita, Japan. Lan was moving toward the north-northeast at 14 m.p.h. (22 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 989 mb.

Tropical Storm Lan moved over the Sea of Japan on Tuesday after it crossed Honshu near Osaka. Lan weakened to a tropical storm as it crossed over Honshu. The distribution of thunderstorms in Tropical Storm Lan was asymmetrical on Tuesday night. Most of the thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the northern half of Lan’s circulation. Bands in the southern half of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Storms in the northern half of Lan generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the north of the tropical storm. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 150 miles (240 km) from the center of Tropical Storm Lan.

Tropical Storm Lan will move through an environment that will be unfavorable for intensification during the next 36 hours. Lan will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28°C. It will move under the eastern part of an upper level trough that is northwest of Japan. The upper level trough will produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Lan’s circulation. Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear. The moderate wind shear will prevent intensification of Tropical Storm Lan. Lan will begin a transition to an extratropical cyclone in a day or so when it moves over colder water.

The upper level trough that is northwest of Japan will steer Tropical Storm Lan toward the northeast during the next 36 hours. On its anticipated track, The center of Tropical Storm Lan will pass west of Hokkaido in 24 hours. Lan could approach Sakhalin Island in 36 hours.

Elsewhere over the Western North Pacific Ocean, former Tropical Storm Dora weakened to a tropical depression north-northeast of Wake Island. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Depression Dora was located at latitude 25.0°N and longitude 168.4°E which put it about 380 miles (610 km) north-northeast of Wake Island. Dora was moving toward the north-northeast at 14 m.p.h. (22 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 30 m.p.h. (50 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1008 mb.

Tropical Storm Khanun Brings Wind and Rain to Kyushu

Tropical Storm Khanun brought wind and rain to Kyushu on Tuesday. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Khanun was located at latitude 31.2°N and longitude 129.1°E which put it about 85 miles (135 km) west-southwest of Kagoshima, Japan. Khanun was moving toward the northwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 979 mb.

Bands in the eastern side of Tropical Storm Khanun brought winds and rain to Kyushu on Tuesday. There was an elliptical area of relatively clear skies at the center of Khanun’s circulation. A broken ring of thunderstorms with a diameter of 70 miles (110 km) surrounded the relatively clear area. The strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Tropical Storm Khanun. Storms near the center generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 175 miles (280 km) from the center of Khanun’s circulation.

Tropical Storm Khanun will move through an environment that will be somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Khanun will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28˚C. It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear. Tropical Storm Khanun could intensify a little during the next 24 hours.

Tropical Storm Khanun will move around the western part of a high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean. The high pressure system will steer Khanun toward the northwest during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Khanun will make landfall in South Korea in less than 24 hours. Khanun will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to South Korea. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations. Bands in the eastern side of Tropical Storm Khanun will continue to produce gusty winds and locally heavy rain in Kyushu during the next 24 hours.

Elsewhere over the Western North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Lan intensified east of Iwo To. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Lan was located at latitude 24.4°N and longitude 146.6°E which put it about 335 miles (540 km) east of Iwo To. Lan was moving toward the west at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 988 mb.

Tropical Storm Khanun Moves Toward Kyushu

Tropical Storm Khanun started to move toward Kyushu on Monday. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Khanun was located at latitude 29.1°N and longitude 130.7°E which put it about 195 miles (315 km) south of Kagoshima, Japan. Khanun was moving toward the north-northwest at 5 m.p.h. (8 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 981 mb.

Tropical Storm Khanun weakened on Monday. There still were no thunderstorms near the center of Khanun’s circulation. A large, mostly clear area was at the center of Tropical Storm Khanun. There were bands of showers and lower clouds within the mostly clear area. A broken ring of thunderstorms with a diameter of 90 miles (145 km) surrounded the mostly clear area. The strongest winds were occurring in the broken ring of storms. Storms in the ring generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. There were also bands of showers and thunderstorms outside the broken ring. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 200 miles (325 km) from the center of Tropical Storm Khanun.

Tropical Storm Khanun will move through an environment that will be somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Khanun will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28˚C. It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear. If Tropical Storm Khanun intensifies during the next 24 hours, it is likely to strengthen slowly, because of the lack of thunderstorms in the inner core of its circulation. If thunderstorms form closer to the center of Khanun’s circulation, then it could start to intensify a little faster.

The high pressure system will steer Khanun toward the north-northwest during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track, The center of Tropical Storm Khanun will be west of Kyushu in 24 hours. Bands in the eastern side of Tropical Storm Khanun will produce gusty winds and locally heavy rain in Kyushu. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.

Elsewhere over the Western North Pacific Ocean, Tropical Storm Lan formed southeast of Japan. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Lan was located at latitude 24.6°N and longitude 148.8°E which put it about 485 miles (780 km) south of Kagoshima, Japan. Lan was moving toward the northwest at 5 m.p.h. (8 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 988 mb.

Tropical Storm Lan Develops Northwest of Palau

Tropical Storm Lan developed northwest of Palau on Monday.  At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Lan was located at latitude 10.7°N and longitude 132.1°E which put it about 275 miles (445 km) north-northwest of Koror, Palau.  Lan was moving toward the west at 12 m.p.h. (19 km/h).  The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h).  The minimum surface pressure was 993 mb.

A more distinct center of circulation developed within Tropical Storm Lan, but the low pressure system was still in the process of organizing.  The low level center of circulation of Lan was at the end of a long rainband that extends from the western periphery around the southern and eastern parts of the tropical storm.  That low level center appeared to be on the northern side of a much larger counterclockwise rotation.  Most of the stronger showers and thunderstorms were occurring in the long rainband.  A few new, thinner bands of showers and thunderstorms seemed to be forming inside the long rainband to west of the center of circulation.

Tropical Storm Lan will be moving through an environment that will be favorable for intensification.  Lan will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperature is near 30°C.  An upper level ridge north of Lan is producing easterly winds which were blowing toward the top of the circulation.  There was some vertical wind shear, but it was not strong enough to prevent the intensification of Tropical Storm Lan.  Tropical Storm Lan is likely to intensify more slowly while the circulation organizes.  Once the center of circulation become tighter, then Lan could intensify more quickly.  A period of rapid intensification could occur, if Lan becomes a typhoon and an eye develops.

The ridge north of Lan and the counterclockwise flow to its south are combining to steer the tropical storm toward the west.  Numerical models are indicating that a weakness will develop in the ridge north of Tropical Storm Lan.  If that happens, then the steering current could weaken for 12 to 24 hours and Tropical Storm Lan might not move much.  If the break in the ridge becomes more pronounced, then Tropical Storm Lan could start to move more toward the north.  On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Lan is expected to remain east of the Philippines, but the tropical storm could move closer to the northern Philippines if the forecast weakness in the ridge does not occur.
