Roslyn Rapidly Intensifies to a Major Hurricane

Hurricane Roslyn rapidly intensified to a major hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean near the west coast of Mexico during Friday night. At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Hurricane Roslyn was located at latitude 17.6°N and longitude 106.3°W which put it about 200 miles (320 km) south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico. Roslyn was moving toward the northwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 120 m.p.h. (195 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 150 m.p.h. (240 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 960 mb.

A Hurricane Warning was in effect for Las Islas Marias. A Hurricane Warning was also in effect for the portion of the coast from Playa Perula to El Roblito, Mexico. The Hurricane Warning included Puerto Vallarta. A Hurricane Watch was in effect for the portion of the coast from El Roblito to Mazatlan, Mexico. Tropical Storm Warnings were in effect for the portions of the coast from Manzanillo to Playa Perula, Mexico and from El Roblito to Mazatlan, Mexico.

The eye was surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Hurricane Roslyn. Storms near the core generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane.

The circulation around Hurricane Roslyn was small. Winds to hurricane force extended out 25 miles (40 km) from the center of Roslyn’s circulation. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 80 miles from the center of circulation. The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) was 22.1. The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 7.0 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 29.1. Hurricane Roslyn was capable of causing localized major damage.

Hurricane Roslyn will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 12 hours. Roslyn will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29˚C. It will move under the axis on an upper level ridge over the Eastern North Pacific. The upper level winds are weak near the axis of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear. Hurricane Roslyn is likely to intensify during the next 12 hours. Roslyn could intensify rapidly for a few more hours. Hurricane Roslyn could strengthen to a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Scale. An upper level trough west of Baja California will produce southwesterly winds on Saturday night that will blow toward the top of Roslyn’s circulation. Those winds will cause the wind shear to increase. Hurricane Roslyn could start to weaken when the wind shear increases.

The high pressure system will steer Roslyn toward the north. The upper level trough west of Baja California will steer Hurricane Roslyn toward the northeast on Saturday night and Sunday. The center of Roslyn is likely to pass just to the west of Cabo Corrientes during Friday night. On its anticipated track Hurricane Roslyn could make landfall on the west coast of Mexico near San Blas on Sunday morning. Roslyn will bring strong gusty winds and locally heavy rain to Nayarit. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations. Hurricane Roslyn could cause a storm surge of up to 13 feet (4 meters) along the coast. Hurricane Roslyn will be capable of causing localized major damage.

Roslyn Intensifies to a Hurricane; Mexico Issues Warnings

Former Tropical Storm Roslyn intensified to a hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean on Friday night and the government of Mexico issued Hurricane Warnings and Tropical Storm Warnings for portions of the coast. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Friday the center of Hurricane Roslyn was located at latitude 16.7°N and longitude 105.6°W which put it about 255 miles (410 km) south of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico. Roslyn was moving toward the west-northwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 85 m.p.h. (135 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 982 mb.

A Hurricane Warning was in effect for Las Islas Marias. A Hurricane Warning was also in effect for the portion of the coast from Playa Perula to El Roblito, Mexico. Tropical Depression 19E Strengthens to Tropical Storm Roslyn

Former Tropical Depression Nineteen-E strengthened to Tropical Storm Roslyn over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico on Thursday afternoon. At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Storm Roslyn was located at latitude 15.5°N and longitude 103.0°W which put it about 180 miles (295 km) south-southwest of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. Roslyn was moving toward the west at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1004 mb.

The government of Mexico issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the portion of the coast from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes.

Tropical Storm Roslyn strengthened gradually on Thursday afternoon. The inner end of a rainband wrapped around the eastern side of the center of Roslyn’s circulation. Tropical Depression Nineteen-E Forms South of Mexico

Tropical Depression Nineteen-E formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico on Wednesday night. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Depression Nineteen-E was located at latitude 15.2°N and longitude 101.3°W which put it about 175 miles (280 km) south of Zihuatanejo, Mexico. The tropical depression was moving toward the west-northwest at 5 m.p.h. (8 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 35 m.p.h. (55 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1007 mb.

A low pressure system over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico strengthened on Wednesday night and the National Hurricane Center designated the system as Tropical Depression Nineteen-E. More thunderstorms were developing near the center of Tropical Depression Nineteen-E. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of circulation. Storms near the center generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical depression.

Tropical Storm Nesat Drops Rain on Hainan

Tropical Storm Nesat dropped rain on Hainan on Tuesday night. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Nesat was located at latitude 17.0°N and longitude 110.5°E which put it about 100 miles (160 km) south-southeast of Lingshui China. Nesat was moving toward the west at 12 m.p.h. (19 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 988 mb.

Former Typhoon Nesat weakened to a tropical storm on Tuesday as it moved over the South China Sea southeast of Hainan. An upper level ridge over China produced easterly winds that blew toward the top of Nesat’s circulation. Those winds caused moderate vertical wind shear and the wind shear caused an asymmetrical distribution of thunderstorms around Tropical Storm Nesat. Most of the thunderstorms were occurring in the northwestern part of Nesat. Those thunderstorms dropped heavy rain over Hainan and parts of southern China. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 200 miles (320 km) from the center of Nesat.

It will continue to move under the southern part of the over China. The ridge will produce easterly winds that will cause moderate vertical wind shear and the wind shear will inhibit intensification. A surface high pressure system over southern China will produce northeasterly winds that will transport drier air into the northern and western parts of Tropical Storm Nesat. The vertical wind shear and the drier air will cause Tropical Storm Nesat to continue to weaken during the next 48 hours.

The surface high pressure system over southern China will steer Tropical Storm Nesat toward the west during the next 48 hours. On its anticipated track, the center of Tropical Storm Nesat will pass south of Hainan during the next 24 hours. Nesat could approach the coast of Vietnam in 36 hours. Bands on the northern side of Tropical Storm Nesat will drop locally heavy rain on parts of Hainan, southern China and northern Vietnam. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.

Typhoon Nesat Passes South of Hong Kong

Typhoon Nesat passed south of Hong Kong as it moved across the South China Sea on Monday night. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Typhoon Nesat was located at latitude 18.0°N and longitude 113.3°E which put it about 285 miles (460 km) south of Hong Kong. Nesat was moving toward the west-southwest at 12 m.p.h. (19 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 90 m.p.h. (145 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 115 m.p.h. (185 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 971 mb.

Typhoon Nesat started to weaken on Monday night as it passed south of Hong Kong. A circular eye was still present at the center of Nesat’s circulation. However a break occurred in the southeastern part of the ring of thunderstorms surrounded the eye of Typhoon Nesat. The strongest winds were occurring in the broken ring of thunderstorms. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were occurring in the western half of Nesat. Bands in the eastern side of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Storms near the center of Nesat generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the west of the typhoon.

The circulation around Typhoon Nesat interacted with a large surface high pressure system over southern China to produce a large area of tropical storm force winds in the northern part of Nesat’s circulation. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 400 miles (640 km) in the northern side of Typhoon Nesat. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 120 miles (195 km) in the southern side of Nesat. Winds to typhoon force extended out 40 miles (65 km) from the center of circulation.

Nesat Intensifies to a Typhoon Northwest of Luzon

At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Typhoon Nesat was located at latitude 19.6°N and longitude 119.5°E which put it about 125 miles (200 km) northwest of Laoag, Philippines. Nesat was moving toward the west-northwest at 12 m.p.h. (19 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 80 m.p.h. (130km/h) and there were wind gusts to 100 m.p.h. (160 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 978 mb.

Tropical Storm Nesat Develops near Northern Luzon

Tropical Storm Nesat developed over the Western North Pacific Ocean near northern Luzon on Saturday morning. At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Storm Nesat was located at latitude 18.6°N and longitude 123.5°E which put it about 160 miles (260 km) east of Claveria, Philippines. Nesat was moving toward the west at 25 m.p.h. (40 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1000 mb.

The circulation around a low pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean near northern Luzon strengthened on Saturday morning and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Nesat. The distribution of thunderstorms in Tropical Storm Nesat was asymmetrical. Many of the thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the western half of Nesat’s circulation. Bands in the eastern side of Tropical Storm Nesat consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 125 miles (200 km) in the northern side of Nesat’s circulation. The winds in the southern half of the circulation were blowing at less than tropical storm force.

Tropical Depression Karl Drops Heavy Rain on Southern Mexico

Tropical Depression Karl dropped heavy rain over parts of southern Mexico on Saturday morning. At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Depression Karl was located at latitude 18.6°N and longitude 93.0°W which put it about 95 miles (150 km) east-northeast of Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. Karl was moving toward the southwest at 5 m.p.h. (8 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 30 m.p.h. (50 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1007 mb.

The center of Tropical Depression Karl made landfall on the coast of Mexico between Coatzacoalcos and Ciudad del Carmen on Saturday morning. Thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the southern part of Karl’s circulation. Those thunderstorms were dropping heavy rain over western Tabasco and southeastern Veracruz. Heavy rain is likely to cause flash floods in some locations. The circulation in the lower levels of Tropical Depression Karl will continue to weaken as it moves farther inland, but thunderstorms will continue to drop heavy rain over the region during the next few hours.

Tropical Storm Karl Moves South Toward Mexico

Tropical Storm Karl moved south toward Mexico on Thursday. At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Storm Karl was located at latitude 20.9°N and longitude 93.5°W which put it about 195 miles (315 km) north-northeast of Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. Karl was moving toward the south-southeast at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1000 mb.

A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Alvarado to Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico.

Even though the surface pressure at the center of Tropical Storm Karl decreased by two millibars on Thursday, the maximum sustained wind speed also decreased. The circulation around Karl pulled some drier air into the western part of the tropical storm. In addition, an upper level trough over the eastern U.S. produced west-northwesterly winds that blew toward the top of Karl’s circulation. Those winds caused moderate vertical wind shear. The drier air and the wind shear caused the strongest thunderstorms to occur in bands in the southern and eastern parts of Tropical Storm Karl. Bands in the northern and western parts of Karl consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Storms near the center of Karl’s circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away to the east of the tropical storm. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 80 miles (130 km) from the center of circulation.

Tropical Storm Karl will move through an environment marginally favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Karl will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29˚C. The upper level trough over the eastern U.S. will continue to produce westerly winds that will blow toward the top of Tropical Storm Karl. Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear. Moderate vertical wind shear and drier air in the western side of Karl’s circulation will inhibit intensification. The intensity of Tropical Storm Karl could fluctuate during the next 24 hours, but Karl is likely to remain a tropical storm.

Tropical Storm Karl will move around the southern part of a surface high pressure system that extends from the north central U.S. over the Gulf of Mexico. The high pressure system will push Karl toward the south during the next 36 hours. On its anticipated track, Tropical Storm Karl will make landfall on the coast of Mexico between Coatzacoalcos and Paraiso on Friday night. Karl will bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to the coastal parts of Tabasco and Veracruz when it makes landfall. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.
