Orlene Strengthens to a Hurricane Southwest of Mexico

Former Tropical Storm Orlene strengthened to a hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico on Saturday morning. At 2:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Hurricane Orlene was located at latitude 17.8°N and longitude 107.0°W which put it about 200 miles (320 km) south-southwest of Cabo Corrientes, Mexico. Orlene was moving toward the north at 5 m.p.h. (8 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 989 mb.

A Hurricane Warning was in effect for Las Islas Marias. A Hurricane Watch was in effect for the portion of the coast from San Blas to Bahia Tempehuaya, Mexico. A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Playa Perula to San Blas, Mexico. A Tropical Storm Watch was in effect for the portion of the coast from Manzanillo to Playa Perula, Mexico.

Former Tropical Storm Orlene strengthened to a hurricane on Saturday morning. A small eye formed at the center of Hurricane Orlene. The eye was surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around core of Orlene’s circulation. Storms near the core generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane.

The circulation around Hurricane Orlene was small. Winds to hurricane force extended out 15 miles (25 km) in the northeastern quadrant of Orlene. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 45 miles (75 km) from the center of circulation.

Hurricane Orlene will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Orlene will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29˚C. Orlene will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear. Hurricane Orlene will intensify during the next 24 hours. Orlene could intensify rapidly now that an inner core with an eye and an eyewall has formed. An upper level trough over northwestern Mexico will produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Orlene’s circulation later on Sunday. Those winds will cause the vertical wind shear to increase. Hurricane Orlene is likely to weaken when the wind shear increases.

Tropical Storm Orlene Forms South of Mexico

Tropical Storm Orlene formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico on Thursday morning. At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Thursday the center of Tropical Storm Orlene was located at latitude 14.8°N and longitude 104.9°W which put it about 295 miles (445 km) south of Manzanillo, Mexico. Orlene was moving toward the west-northwest at 13 m.p.h. (20 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1006 mb.

The circulation around a low pressure system south of Mexico strengthened on Thursday morning and the National Hurricane Center designated the system as Tropical Storm Orlene. The circulation around Tropical Storm Orlene was organizing quickly. The inner end of a rainband wrapped around the western and southern sides of the center of Orlene’s circulation. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center. Storms near the center generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 35 miles (55 km) from the center of Orlene.

Tropical Storm Orlene will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 36 hours. Orlene will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29˚C. Orlene will move under the western part of an upper level ridge over Mexico. The ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Orlene’s circulation. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear, but the wind shear will not be enough to prevent intensification. Tropical Storm Orlene is likely to intensify during the next 36 hours. Orlene could strengthen to a hurricane by Friday night.

Tropical Storm Newton formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico on Wednesday evening. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Newton was located at latitude 17.6°N and longitude 107.0°W which put it about 200 miles (325 km) west-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. Newton was moving toward the west-northwest at 13 m.p.h. (20 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1002 mb.

An area of low pressure over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico strengthened on Wednesday evening and the National Hurricane Center designated the system as Tropical Storm Newton. Thunderstorms were developing near the center of Tropical Storm Newton. Other thunderstorms formed in bands revolving around the center of Newton’s circulation. Storms near the center generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 60 miles (95 km) in the northern side of Tropical Storm Newton. The winds in the southern side of the circulation were blowing at less than tropical storm force.

Tropical Storm Newton will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Newton will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27˚C. It will move through a region where the upper level winds are weak and there will be little vertical wind shear. Tropical Storm Newton is likely to intensify during the next 24 hours. Newton will move over cooler water on Friday and it will start to weaken.

Tropical Storm Newton will move around the southern side of a high pressure system over Mexico. The high pressure system will steer Newton toward the west-northwest during the next 48 hours. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Newton will pass south of Baja California on Friday.

Tropical Storm Madeline Spins West of Mexico

Tropical Storm Madeline continued to spin over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean west of Mexico on Sunday evening. At 8:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Storm Madeline was located at latitude 19.0°N and longitude 107.6°W which put it about 310 miles (500 km) south-southeast of the southern tip of Baja California. Madeline was moving toward the north-northwest at 8 m.p.h. (13km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 999 mb.

A Tropical Storm Watch was in effect for the portion of the coast from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes, Mexico.

Satellite images of Tropical Storm Madeline on Sunday evening gave indications that Madelline might be getting more organized. More thunderstorms developed near the center of Madeline’s circulation. Other thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the western side of Tropical Storm Madeline and on the far eastern side of the circulation. The new thunderstorms near the center of circulation began to generate upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 130 miles (210 km) from the center of Madeline.

Madeline will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27˚C. It will move under the southern part of an upper level ridge centered near the west coast of Mexico. The ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Madeline’s circulation. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear. The wind shear will inhibit intensification, but the shear may not be strong enough to prevent it. Tropical Storm Madeline could intensify during the next 24 hours.

Kay Strengthens to a Hurricane Southwest of Mexico

Former Tropical Storm Kay strengthened to a hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico on Monday afternoon. At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Monday the center of Hurricane Kay was located at latitude 15.6°N and longitude 107.3°W which put it about 305 miles (495 km) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. Kay was moving toward the west-northwest at 10 m.p.h. (16 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 80 m.p.h. (130 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 95 m.p.h. (150 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 981 mb.

The government of Mexico issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the portion of the coast from Loreto to Puerto San Andresito.

Former Tropical Storm Kay intensified rapidly to a hurricane on Monday afternoon. The inner end of a rainband wrapped completely the center of Kay’s circulation. An eye formed at the center of Hurricane Kay. The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms. Other bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of Kay’s circulation. Storms near the center of circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane. Winds to hurricane force extended out 25 miles (40 km) in the northeastern quadrant of Hurricane Kay. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 175 miles (280 km) from the center of circulation.

A potential risk posed by Tropical Storm Kay prompted the government of Mexico to issue a Tropical Storm Watch for the coast of southern Baja California on Monday morning. At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Kay was located at latitude 15.8°N and longitude 106.4°W which put it about 260 miles (420 km) south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. Kay was moving toward the west at 15 m.p.h. (24 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 75 m.p.h. (120 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 995 mb.

Tropical Storm Frank formed over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Mexico on Tuesday morning. At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Frank was located at latitude 11.6°N and longitude 102.4°W which put it about 525 miles (845 km) south-southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico. Frank was moving toward the west at 12 m.p.h. (19 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1004 mb.

The distribution of thunderstorms around Tropical Storm Frank was asymmetrical. Many of the thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the western half of Frank’s circulation. Bands in the eastern half of the tropical storm consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. An upper level ridge over Mexico and the Eastern North Pacific was producing easterly winds that were blowing toward the top of Frank’s circulation. Those winds were causing moderate vertical wind shear and they were the main reason for the asymmetrical distribution of thunderstorms. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 35 miles (55 km) in the northern side of Tropical Storm Frank. The winds in the southern half of Frank were blowing at less than tropical storm force.

Tropical Storm Frank will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 36 hours. Frank will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29˚C. However, the upper level ridge will continue to produce easterly winds that will cause moderate vertical wind shear. The wind shear will inhibit intensification. Tropical Storm Frank could strengthen gradually during the next 36 hours, if the vertical wind shear does not increase.

Tropical Storm Frank will move south of a high pressure system over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean. The high pressure system will steer Frank toward the west during the next 36 hours. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Frank will move farther away from the west coast of Mexico. Frank will pass south of Baja California later this week.

Estelle Rapidly Intensifies to a Hurricane

Former Tropical Storm Estelle rapidly intensified to a hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of Manzanillo, Mexico on Saturday. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Hurricane Estelle was located at latitude 14.7°N and longitude 105.0°W which put it about 300 miles (485 km) south of Manzanillo, Mexico. Estelle was moving toward the west-northwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 80 m.p.h. (130 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 95 m.p.h. (150 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 988 mb.

Storms near the core generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the hurricane in all directions. Winds to hurricane force extended out 15 miles (25 km) from the center of Estelle. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 70 miles (110 km) from the center of circulation.

Hurricane Estelle will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 36 hours. Estelle will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29˚C. It will move under an upper level ridge near the west coast of Mexico. The upper level winds are weak in the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear. Hurricane Estelle will intensify during the next 36 hours. Estelle could continue to intensify rapidly and it could strengthen to a major hurricane.

At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Storm Darby was located at latitude 17.7°N and longitude 157.5°W which put it about 250 miles (400 km) south of Honolulu, Hawaii. Darby was moving toward the west at 22 m.p.h. (32 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1007 mb.

Tropical Storm Celia Churns Southwest of Mexico

Tropical Storm Celia churned over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Mexico on Wednesday night. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Celia was located at latitude 14.2°N and longitude 104.4°W which put it about 330 miles (535 km) south of Manzanillo, Mexico. Celia was moving toward the northwest at 7 m.p.h. (11 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1000 mb.

Winds to tropical storm force extended out 70 miles (110 km) from the center of Celia’s circulation. Even though Tropical Storm Celia strengthened a little on Wednesday, the distribution of thunderstorms remained asymmetrical. The strongest thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the western and southern parts of Celia’s circulation. Bands in the eastern and northern parts of Tropical Storm Celia consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. An upper level ridge over Mexico and the Eastern North Pacific Ocean was producing moderate east-northeasterly winds that were blowing toward the top of Celia’s circulation. Those winds were causing some vertical wind shear and the wind shear was contributing to the asymmetrical distribution of thunderstorms.

Tropical Storm Celia will move through an environment that will become more favorable for intensification during the next 48 hours. Celia will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 28˚C. Although the upper level ridge over Mexico and the Eastern North Pacific will continue to produce east-northeasterly winds, those winds will weaken during the next 48 hours. When the upper level winds weaken, the vertical wind shear will diminish. Tropical Storm Celia is likely to intensify during the next 48 hours. Celia could strengthen to a hurricane on Friday.

Tropical Depression Three-E Strengthens to Tropical Storm Celia

Former Tropical Depression Three-E strengthened to Tropical Storm Celia over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean south of El Salvador on Friday morning. At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Tropical Storm Celia was located at latitude 11.6°N and longitude 89.3°W which put it about 145 miles (235 km) south of San Salvador, El Salvador. Celia was moving toward the north-northeast at 3 m.p.h. (5 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1004 mb.

The strongest thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the western half of Tropical Storm Celia. Bands in the eastern half of Celia’s circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. The thunderstorms in the western half of the circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. The circulation around Tropical Storm Celia was small. Blas was moving toward the west-northwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 90 m.p.h. (145 km/h) and and there were wind gusts to 105 m.p.h. (165 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 976 mb.
