Champi Strengthens to a Typhoon Southwest of Iwo To

Former Tropical Storm Chanpi strengthened to a typhoon southwest of Iwo To on Friday morning. At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Typhoon Champi was located at latitude 22.5°N and longitude 139.2°E which put it about 230 miles (370 km) southwest of Iwo To. Champi was moving toward the north at 11 m.p.h. (17 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 982 mb.

The circulation around Typhoon Champi exhibited better organization on Friday morning. There was a small, circular eye at the center of Champi. The eye was surrounded by a ring of strong thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the core of Typhoon Champi. The strongest rainband wrapped around the northern, western and southern sides of Champi. Bands in the eastern side of the typhoon consisted mainly of showers and lower clouds. The circulation around Typhoon Champi was relatively small. Winds to typhoon force extended out 30 miles (50 km) from the center of Champi. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 100 miles (160 km) from the center of circulation.

Typhoon Champi will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Champi will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29°C. It will move under the southeastern part of an upper level trough over Japan. The trough will produce southwesterly winds which will blow toward the top of the typhoon. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear. The wind shear will inhibit intensification, but Typhoon Champi could strengthen during the next 24 hours. The vertical wind shear will increase during the weekend, when Champi moves closer to the upper level trough.

Typhoon Champi will move around the western end of a surface high pressure system during the next 24 hours. The high will steer Champi toward the north during that time period. On its anticipated track the center of Typhoon Champi will pass west of Iwo To on Friday night. Bands on the eastern side of Champi could bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to Iwo To. The upper level trough over Japan will steer Typhoon Champi toward the northeast during the weekend. Champi could be southeast of Tokyo in 48 hours.

Tropical Storm Enrique Forms South of Mexico

Tropical Storm Enrique formed south of Mexico on Friday morning. At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Tropical Storm Enrique was located at latitude 15.0°N and longitude 101.7°W which put it about 325 miles (525 km) south-southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico. Enrique was moving toward the west-northwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (75 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1005 mb.

An area of low pressure south of Mexico strengthened on Friday morning and the National Hurricane Center designated the system as Tropical Storm Enrique. The circulation around Tropical Storm Enrique was organizing on Friday morning. Thunderstorms were developing near the center of Enrique. Storms near the center were generating upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of circulation. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 70 miles (110 km) in the southeastern quadrant of Tropical Storm Enrique. The winds were blowing at less than tropical storm force in the other parts of Enrique.

Tropical Storm Enrique will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 48 hours. Enrique will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29°C. It will move southeast of an upper level ridge centered over the southwestern U.S. The ridge will produce northeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of the tropical storm. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear, but the shear will not be strong enough to prevent intensification. Tropical Storm Enrique will intensify during the next 48 hours and it could strengthen to a hurricane during the weekend.

Tropical Storm Enrique will move around the southwestern side of a surface high pressure system over Mexico. The high will steer Enrique toward the west-northwest during the next few days. On its anticipated track the center of Tropical Storm Enrique is forecast to move parallel to the west coast of Mexico during the next 48 hours.

Tropical Storm Champi Strengthens South of Iwo To

Tropical Storm Champi strengthened south of Iwo To on Wednesday. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Champi was located at latitude 18.9°N and longitude 140.1°E which put it about 435 miles (680 km) south of Iwo To. Champi was moving toward the north at 6 m.p.h. (10 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 75 m.p.h. (120 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 992 mb.

Tropical Storm Champi continued to strengthen on Wednesday. The inner end of a rainband wrapped most of the way around the center of Champi. Stronger thunderstorms were occurring in bands east and south of the center of circulation. Bands in the northwestern side of the tropical storm consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Storms near the center of circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 70 miles (110 km) from the center of Champi.

Tropical Storm Champi will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 36 hours. Champi will move over an area where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29°C. It will move under the southeastern portion of an upper level ridge centered east of the Philippines. The ridge will produce northeasterly winds that will blow toward the top of the tropical storm. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear. The vertical wind shear will slow the rate of intensification, but it will not be large enough prevent Tropical Storm Champi from strengthening. Champi will intensify during the next 36 hours and it is forecast to strengthen to a typhoon.

Tropical Storm Champi will move around the western end of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean during the next 48 hours. The high will steer Champi toward the north during the next two days. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Champi could be southwest of Iwo To in 36 hours.

Tropical Storm Champi Develops West of the Marianas

Tropical Storm Champi developed west of the Marianas on Tuesday night. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Champi was located at latitude 15.3°N and longitude 139.9°E which put it about 320 miles (515 km) west-northwest of Guam. Champi was moving toward the west-northwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1000 mb.

The circulation around former Tropical Depression 06W strengthened on Tuesday night and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Champi. More thunderstorms formed near the center of Tropical Storm Champi. The inner end of a rainband wrapped around the eastern and northern sides of the center of Champi. Other bands of showers and thunderstorms were revolving around the center of circulation. Storms near the center generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 50 miles (80 km) from the center of circulation.

Tropical Storm Champi will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 48 hours. Champi will move over an area where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29°C. It will move between an upper level low northeast of the Marianas and and upper level ridge over eastern Asia. The upper level winds are weak between the upper low and the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear. Tropical Storm Champi will intensify during the next 48 hours and it could strengthen to a typhoon.

Tropical Storm Champi will move around the western end of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean during the next 48 hours. The high will steer Champi toward the north during the next several days. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Champi could be southwest of Iwo To in 48 hours.

Claudette Strengthens Back to a Tropical Storm

Former Tropical Depression Claudette strengthened back to a tropical storm on Monday morning. At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Claudette was located at latitude 36.4°N and longitude 76.3°W which put it about 15 miles (25 km) west of Duck, North Carolina. Claudette was moving toward the east-northeast at 28 m.p.h. (45 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1007 mb.

When the center of former Tropical Depression Claudette moved close to the coast of North Carolina, the sustained wind speed in bands in the part of the circulation over the Atlantic Ocean increased to tropical force. The National Hurricane Center upgraded the system to Tropical Storm Claudette on Monday morning. The distribution of thunderstorms and the wind field around Tropical Storm Claudette was asymmetrical. The strongest thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in bands on the eastern side of Claudette. Bands in the western side of the circulation consisted mainly of showers and lower clouds. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 140 miles (220 km) on the eastern side of Claudette.

Tropical Storm Claudette will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Claudette will move over an area where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 27°C. An upper level trough centered near the Great Lakes will produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Claudette. Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear and they will inhibit intensification. Tropical Storm Claudette could get a little stronger on Monday. Claudette will move over cooler water when it moves north of the Gulf Stream and it will make a transition to an extratropical cyclone.

The upper level trough over the Great Lakes will steer Tropical Storm Claudette quickly toward the northeast. On its anticipated track Claudette will move rapidly away from the East Coast of the U.S. Tropical Storm Claudette could pass south of Nova Scotia on Tuesday.

Tropical Depression Forms Southeast of Guam, Warning Issued

Tropical Depression 06W formed southeast of Guam on Sunday night and a Tropical Storm Warning was issued for Guam. At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Depression 06W was located at latitude 12.1°N and longitude 146.0°E which put it about 160 miles (260 km) southeast of Guam. Tropical Depression 06W was moving toward the west-northwest at 13 m.p.h. (20 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 35 m.p.h. (55 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1000 mb.

A Tropical Storm Warning was issued for Guam. A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for Rota.

A circulation center developed in a cluster of thunderstorms southeast of Guam on Sunday night and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center designated the system as Tropical Depression 06W. The distribution of thunderstorms around Tropical Depression 06W was asymmetrical. The strongest thunderstorms were occurring in bands on the eastern side of the tropical depression. Bands in the western half of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Storms near the center of Tropical Depression 06W began to generate upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical depression.

Tropical Depression 06W will move through an environment that is somewhat favorable for intensification during the next several days. The depression will move over an area where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 29°C. It will move south of an upper level ridge over the Western North Pacific Ocean. The ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Tropical Depression 06W. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear, but the shear will not be strong enough to prevent intensification. The tropical depression will move into an area where drier air is sinking toward the surface. The drier air will limit the formation of thunderstorms on the western side of the circulation and it will inhibit intensification. Tropical Depression 06W is forecast to intensify to a tropical storm during the next 24 hours.

Tropical Depression 06W will move around the western side of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean. The high will steer the depression toward the northwest during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track Tropical Depression 06W will pass near Guam in 12 hours. The tropical depression will bring gusty winds and heavy rain to parts of Guam. It will move more toward the north when it reaches the western end of the high pressure system.

Tropical Depression Claudette Prompts Warning for North Carolina

Even though the center of circulation was well inland over the southeastern U.S. on Sunday morning, Tropical Depression Claudette prompted the issuance of a Tropical Storm Warning for the coast of North Carolina. At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Tropical Depression Claudette was located at latitude 33.7°N and longitude 84.8°W which put it about 25 miles (40 km) west of Atlanta, Georgia. Claudette was moving toward the east-northeast at 13 m.p.h. (20 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 30 m.p.h. (50 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1007 mb.

A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the coast of North Carolina from Little River Inlet to Duck including Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds. A Tropical Storm Watch was issued for the portion of the coast from South Santee River, South Carolina to Little River Inlet, North Carolina.

Although the center of Tropical Depression Claudette had been over land for a day, the circulation was still well organized. A well defined center of lower pressure was evident at the surface. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were visible on satellite and radar images. The strongest winds were occurring in the bands that were over the northeastern Gulf of Mexico. The winds were weaker over land. Rain was falling over the region from northern Florida to North Carolina. The heaviest rain was falling in a band over northern Florida and a Tornado Watch was in effect for part of that region.

Tropical Depression Claudette will move into an environment more favorable for intensification on Sunday. The center of Claudette will still be over land, but it will move east of the Appalachian Mountains. It will move between an upper level trough over the North Central U.S. and an upper level ridge southeast of the U.S. The trough and the ridge will produce southwesterly winds which will blow toward the top of the tropical depression. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear, but they will also generate upper level divergence to the northeast of Tropical Depression Claudette. The upper level divergence could allow the surface pressure to decrease while Claudette is still over land. A decrease in pressure could generate enough additional force to increase the wind speeds along the coast of North Carolina and South Carolina, when the center Tropical Depression Claudette gets closer to the coast.

Tropical Depression Claudette will move north of a surface high pressure system centered southeast of the U.S. on Sunday. The high will steer Claudette toward the east-northeast during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track the center of Tropical Depression Claudette will move across Georgia and South Carolina on Sunday. Claudette will continue to drop heavy rain over parts of the southeastern U.S. Flash Flood Watches were in effect for northern Florida, northern Georgia, South Carolina, and eastern North Carolina. There could also be enough wind shear to generate tornadoes in bands on the eastern side of Tropical Depression Claudette.

Tropical Storm Dolores Drops Heavy Rain over Western Mexico

Tropical Storm Dolores dropped heavy rain over western Mexico on Saturday. Dolores weakened to a tropical depression on Saturday evening when the center moved inland. At 8:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Depression Dolores was located at latitude 21.3°N and longitude 104.2°W which put it about 80 miles (130 km) northeast of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Dolores was moving toward the north-northwest at 20 m.p.h. (32 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 35 m.p.h. (55 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1001 mb.

Tropical Storm Dolores made landfall on the coast of Mexico southeast of Manzanillo on Saturday afternoon. The maximum sustained wind speed was 70 m.p.h. (110 km/h) at the time of landfall. Dolores moved steadily toward the north-northwest after it made landfall. The lower part of the circulation around Tropical Storm Dolores weakened quickly when it moved inland over the mountains in west central Mexico. Even though it was weakening, rising motion in portions of the circulation around Dolores was enhanced in places where the air moved up the sides of mountains. Tropical Storm Dolores dropped heavy rain over parts of Michoacan, Colima, Jalisco and Nayarit.

Tropical Storm Dolores Strengthens Near Mexico

Tropical Storm Dolores strengthened near the west coast of Mexico on Saturday morning. At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Storm Dolores was located at latitude 17.9°N and longitude 103.4°W which put it about 95 miles (155 km) southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico. Dolores was moving toward the north-northwest at 13 m.p.h. (20 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 80 m.p.h. (130 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 994 mb.

A Hurricane Watch was in effect for the portion of the coast from Lazaro Cardenas to Cabo Corrientes, Mexico. A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Lazaro Cardenas to Cabo Corrientes, Mexico. A Tropical Storm Watch was in effect for the portion of the coast from Cabo Corrientes to Escuinapa, Mexico.

The circulation around Tropical Storm Dolores exhibited much more organization on Saturday morning. The inner end of a rainband wrapped around the western, southern and eastern sides of the center of circulation. An eye appeared to be forming at the center of Dolores. Storms near the center of circulation generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the tropical storm. The circulation around Tropical Storm Dolores was relatively small. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 100 miles (160 km) in the northern half of the circulation. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 60 miles (95 km) in the southern half of Dolores.

Tropical Storm Dolores will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next few hours. Dolores will move over an area where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30°C. It will move under the western part of an upper level ridge over southern Mexico and the Eastern North Pacific Ocean. The upper level winds are weak in that portion of the ridge and there will be little vertical wind shear. Tropical Storm Dolores could strengthen to a hurricane before it makes landfall.

Tropical Storm Dolores will move around the western end of a small high pressure system over southern Mexico. The high pressure system will steer Dolores toward the north-northwest during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Dolores could make landfall on the coast of Mexico east of Manzanillo in a few hours. Dolores could be a hurricane when it makes landfall. Tropical Storm Dolores will bring gusty winds to the region near and to the east of Manzanillo. It could cause a storm surge of up to seven feet (two meters) in some locations on the coast. Bands on the northern side of Tropical Storm Dolores could drop heavy rain on parts of western Guerrero, Colima and Jalisco. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations.

Tropical Storm Claudette Brings Rain to Southeast U.S.

Tropical Storm Claudette brought wind and rain to the southeastern U.S. on Saturday morning. At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Storm Claudette was located at latitude 30.4°N and longitude 90.1°W which put it about 30 miles (50 km) north of New Orleans, Louisiana. Tropical Storm Claudette was moving toward the north-northeast at 12 m.p.h. (19 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1006 mb.

A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for the portion of the coast from Morgan City, Louisiana to the Okaloosa/Walton County Line, Florida including New Orleans, Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Maurepas. The Tropical Storm Warning included Biloxi, Mississippi, Mobile, Alabama and Pensacola, Florida.

A well defined low level center of circulation formed in the system formerly called Potential Tropical Cyclone Three on Saturday morning and the National Hurricane Center classified the system as Tropical Storm Claudette. The strongest winds and heaviest rain were falling in bands north and east of the center of Claudette. Drier air was wrapping around the western and southern parts of Tropical Storm Claudette, Bands in those parts of the circulation consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. The stronger winds were occurring in the portion of the circulation that was still over the Gulf of Mexico. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 200 miles (320 km) on the eastern side of Claudette. Winds on the western side of Claudette were blowing at less than tropical storm force.

Tropical Storm Claudette will move around the northwestern part of a high pressure system southeast of the U.S. The high pressure system will steer it toward the northeast during the next 36 hours. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Claudette will move across southeastern Mississippi on Saturday and it could reach Alabama by Saturday night. Claudette will move across Georgia on Sunday and it could be over South Carolina by Sunday evening. Tropical Storm Claudette will drop locally heavy rain over parts of the southeastern U.S. Heavy rain could cause flash floods. Flash Flood Watches were in effect for parts of southeastern Mississippi, Alabama, northwestern Florida, and western Georgia. There may also be enough low level wind shear to produce tornadoes in the rainbands in the eastern side of the circulation.
