Tropical Storm Calvin Brings Gusty Winds and Rain to Hawaii

Tropical Storm Calvin brought gusty winds and rain to Hawaii on Wednesday. At 8:00 a.m. EDT on Wednesday the center of Tropical Storm Calvin was located at latitude 17.7°N and longitude 155.6°W which put it about 160 miles (260 km) south of Hilo, Hawaii. Calvin was moving toward the west at 20 m.p.h. (32 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 65 m.p.h. (105 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1003 mb.

A Tropical Storm Warning was in effect for Hawaii County.

After Tropical Storm Calvin strengthened late on Tuesday, it started to weaken again on Wednesday morning. An upper level trough northwest of Hawaii was producing southwesterly winds that were blowing toward the top of Calvin’s circulation. There were strong easterly winds in the lower levels of the atmosphere. The combination of southwesterly winds in the upper troposphere and easterly winds in the lower levels of the atmosphere caused strong vertical wind shear. The winds in the upper troposphere blew the top part of Tropical Storm Calvin toward the northeast. The strong easterly winds near the surface pushed the lower part of Calvin quickly toward the west.

The strong vertical wind shear caused Tropical Storm Calvin to weaken on Wednesday morning. The center of Calvin at the surface was passing south of the Big Island of Hawaii. Bands revolving around the center at the surface consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. Thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the northern side of Tropical Storm Calvin where the wind was pushing air up the eastern slopes of the Hawaiian Islands. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 140 miles (220 km) in the northern side of Calvin’s circulation. Winds in the southern part of Calvin were blowing at less than tropical storm force.

Tropical Storm Calvin will move through an environment unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Calvin will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 26˚C. However, the upper level trough northwest of Hawaii will continue to cause strong vertical wind shear. Tropical Storm Calvin will weaken to a tropical depression during the next 24 hours.

Tropical Storm Calvin will continue to produce gusty winds and locally heavy rain in Hawaii during the next 24 hours. The strongest wind gusts will occur at higher elevations. Calvin could cause isolated minor wind damage. Locally heavy rain could cause flooding in some locations. Tropical Storm Calvin Speeds Toward Hawaii

At 2:00 p.m. EDT on Tuesday the center of Tropical Storm Calvin was located at latitude 17.6°N and longitude 150.5°W which put it about 330 miles (640 km) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii. Calvin was moving toward the west at 22 m.p.h. (35 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1002 mb.

Those winds are not very strong, but they will cause some vertical wind shear. Tropical Storm Calvin could strengthen during the next 24 hours in spite of the vertical wind shear.

Tropical Storm Don started to make a big, clockwise loop over the Atlantic Ocean west of the Azores on Monday. At 11:00 p.m. EDT on Monday the center of Tropical Storm Don was located at latitude 37.4°N and longitude 40.4°W which put it about 735 miles (1180 km) west of the Azores. Don was moving toward the southeast at 13 m.p.h. (20 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1007 mb.

Former Subtropical Storm Don went through several stages as it made a transition to a tropical storm. Don weakened to a subtropical depression on Sunday while it was over cooler water and in a region with more vertical wind shear. It made a transition from a subtropical depression to a tropical depression on Monday morning, when more thunderstorms developed in the northeastern part of the circulation. Don then strengthened to a tropical storm on Monday evening.

Tropical Storm Don was over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures were near 24˚C on Monday evening. The distribution of thunderstorms in Tropical Storm Don remained asymmetrical. Most of thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the northeastern part of Don’s circulation. The strongest winds were also occurring in that part of Tropical Storm Don. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 105 miles (165 km) in the northeastern part of Don. Bands in the other parts of Tropical Storm Don consisted primarily of showers and lower clouds. The winds in the other parts of Don’s circulation were blowing at less that tropical storm force.

Tropical Storm Don will move through an environment that will be only marginally favorable for intensification during the next 36 hours. Don will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 25˚C. It will move under the eastern side of an upper level low over the Central Atlantic Ocean. The upper level low will produce southwesterly winds that will blow toward the top of Don’s circulation. Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear. The wind shear will inhibit intensification. Tropical Storm Don could strengthen a little during the next 36 hours, but its intensity may not change much.

Tropical Storm Don will move around the northern part of a high pressure system over the Central Atlantic Ocean during the next 36 hours. The high pressure system will steer Don toward the south during the next 36 hours. Don is likely to move toward the west on later this week. Calvin Prompts Tropical Storm Watch for Hawaii

Typhoon Talim Brings Wind and Rain to Southern China

Typhoon Talim brought wind and rain to southern China on Monday. At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Monday the center of Typhoon Talim was located at latitude 21.3°N and longitude 110.5°E which put it about 10 miles (15 km) east of Zhanjiang, China. Talim was moving toward the west-northwest at 14 m.p.h. (22 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 973 mb.

The center of Typhoon Talim made landfall on the south coast of China near Zhanjiang on Monday. The size of the circulation around Typhoon Talim increased as it approached the coast. Winds to typhoon force extended out 65 miles (105 km) from the center of Talim’s circulation. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 155 miles (250 km) from the center of circulation.

The eye of Typhoon Talim was on the coast of southern China near Zhanjiang. The eye was surrounded by a ring of thunderstorms and the strongest winds were occurring in that ring of storms. Bands of showers and thunderstorms were dropping heavy rain over parts of Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. Heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations. Winds blowing around the northern side of Typhoon Talim were pushing water toward the coast and the winds were generating a storm surge of up to seven feet (two meters).

Typhoon Talim will move around the southwestern part of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean. The high pressure system will steer Talim toward the west-northwest during the next 36 hours. On its anticipated track, Typhoon Talim will move inland over southern China. Typhoon Talim will continue to bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to southern China during the next 36 hours. Talim will produce strong winds and heavy rain in southwestern Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. Locally heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations. Talim will also bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to parts of northern Vietnam when it moves farther west.

Talim Strengthens to a Typhoon South of Hong Kong

Former Tropical Storm Talim strengthened to a typhoon south of Hong Kong on Sunday. At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Sunday the center of Typhoon Talim was located at latitude 19.8°N and longitude 113.7°E which put it about 180 miles (290 km) south of Hong Kong. Talim was moving toward the west-northwest at 8 m.p.h. (13 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 75 m.p.h. (120 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 90 m.p.h. (145 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 975 mb.

Former Tropical Storm Talim strengthened steadily during the weekend and Talim reached typhoon intensity on Sunday. Storms near the core generated upper level divergence that pumped mass away from the typhoon. Winds to typhoon force extended out 20 miles (30 km) in the northern side of Talim’s circulation. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 140 miles (220 km) from the center of Talim.

Typhoon Talim will move through an environment favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Talim will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30˚C. It will move under the southern side of an upper level ridge that extends from the Western North Pacific Ocean to China. The ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Talim’s circulation. Those winds will cause some vertical wind shear but the wind shear will not be enough to prevent intensification. Typhoon Talim will intensify during the next 24 hours.

Typhoon Talim will move around the southwestern part of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean. The high pressure system will steer Talim toward the west-northwest during the next 24 hours. On its anticipated track, the center of Typhoon Talim will make landfall on the coast of south China near Zhanjiang and Leizhou in 24 hours. Typhoon Talim will bring strong winds and locally heavy rain to southern China. Talim will bring strong winds and heavy rain to Guangdong, Guangxi and Hainan. Locally heavy rain could cause flash floods in some locations. Typhoon Talim could cause a storm surge of up to 7 feet (2 meters) along the coast of southern China. Talim will also bring gusty winds and locally heavy rain to parts of northern Vietnam early next week.

Hurricane Calvin churned toward the Central Pacific Ocean on Saturday. At 5:00 p.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Hurricane Calvin was located at latitude 15.0°N and longitude 130.4°W which put it about 1660 miles (2670 km) east of Hilo, Hawaii. Calvin was moving toward the west at 16 m.p.h. (26 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 100 m.p.h. (160 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 120 m.p.h. (195 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 975 mb.

Hurricane Calvin weakened on Saturday when it moved over cooler water east of Hawaii. Thunderstorms around the center of Calvin’s circulation did not rise as high into the atmosphere. The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 9.3 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 25.8.

Don was moving toward the northwest at 9 m.p.h. (15 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 45 m.p.h. (75 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 60 m.p.h. (95 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 1006 mb.

Subtropical Storm Don moved over slightly cooler water and less energy was transferred from the ocean to the atmosphere. In addition, the center of Don’s circulation was under the southeastern part of an upper level low over the Central Atlantic. The upper level low was producing southeasterly winds that were blowing across the top of Subtropical Storm Don. Those winds were causing moderate vertical wind shear. The cooler water and moderate vertical wind shear caused Subtropical Storm Don to weaken.

Subtropical Storm Don will move through an environment unfavorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. Don will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 25˚C. The upper level low will continue to cause moderate vertical wind shear. The upper level low could also circulate sinking, drier air around the southern side of Don’s circulation. Subtropical Storm Don could weaken a little more during the next 24 hours, but its intensity may not change much.

Subtropical Storm Don will move around the northwestern part of a subtropical high pressure system over the Atlantic Ocean during the next 24 hours. The high pressure system will steer Don toward the north during the next 24 hours. Don is likely to move toward the east on Sunday. On its anticipated track, Subtropical Storm Don will meander west of the Azores during the next few days.

Tropical Storm Talim Forms over South China Sea

Tropical Storm Talim formed over the South China Sea during Friday night. At 5:00 a.m. EDT on Saturday the center of Tropical Storm Talim was located at latitude 18.2°N and longitude 117.7°E which put it about 360 miles (585 km) southeast of Hong Kong. Talim was moving toward the northwest at 5 m.p.h. (8 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 40 m.p.h. (65 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 50 m.p.h. (80 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 992 mb.

A large low pressure system over the South China Sea strengthened during Friday night and the Japan Meteorological Agency designated the system as Tropical Storm Talim. The circulation around Tropical Storm Talim was very large. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 200 miles (320 km) in the northwestern quadrant of Talim’s circulation. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 90 miles (145 km) in the eastern side of the circulation. Even though the circulation around Tropical Storm Talim was large, the winds were weaker near the center of circulation. There were few thunderstorms near the center of circulation. Thunderstorms were occurring in bands in the northern and southern sides of Tropical Storm Talim.

Tropical Storm Talim will move through an environment somewhat favorable for intensification during the next 24 hours. The water at the surface of the South China Sea is very warm. Talim will move over water where the Sea Surface Temperatures are near 30˚C. It will move under the southern side of an upper level ridge that extends from the Western North Pacific Ocean to China. The ridge will produce easterly winds that will blow toward the top of Talim’s circulation. Those winds will cause moderate vertical wind shear and the shear will inhibit intensification. Tropical Storm Talim is likely to intensify during the next 24 hours in spite of the vertical wind shear.

Tropical Storm Talim will move around the southwestern part of a subtropical high pressure system over the Western North Pacific Ocean. The high pressure system will steer Talim toward the northwest during the weekend. On its anticipated track Tropical Storm Talim could be south of Hong Kong in less than 48 hours. Talim could approach the coast of southern China early next week. Tropical Storm Talim could be a typhoon when it approaches southern China.

Calvin Rapidly Intensifies to a Major Hurricane

Hurricane Calvin rapidly intensified to a major hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean on Friday morning. At 11:00 a.m. EDT on Friday the center of Hurricane Calvin was located at latitude 13.6°N and longitude 123.2°W which put it about 1080 miles (1740 km) southwest of the southern tip of Baja California. Calvin was moving toward the west at 16 m.p.h. (26 km/h). The maximum sustained wind speed was 120 m.p.h. (195 km/h) and there were wind gusts to 140 m.p.h. (220 km/h). The minimum surface pressure was 960 mb.

Hurricane Calvin rapidly intensified to a major hurricane over the Eastern North Pacific Ocean southwest of Baja California on Friday morning. Winds to tropical storm force extended out 115 miles (185 km) from the center. The Hurricane Intensity Index (HII) for Hurricane Calvin was 22.1. The Hurricane Size Index (HSI) was 10.3 and the Hurricane Wind Intensity Size Index (HWISI) was 32.4.
